Royal Mail to build 840,000 sq ft parcel hub in East Midlands

The East Midlands is set to become home to the Royal Mail’s largest-ever parcel hub.

The 840,000 sq ft facility, at the Daventry International Rail Freight Interchange (DIRFT) will be built and in operation by 2023, according to reports in trade title Property Week.

It will have the capacity to process more than a million pieces of post a day.

Royal Mail announced the first of two fully-automated hubs – in Warrington – last year. It currently operates out of a 272,603 sq ft parcel delivery hub on DIRFT.

Simon Thompson, chief executive of Royal Mail, said: “Our business is accelerating and this state-of-the-art parcel hub in the Midlands will allow us to seize the market opportunity and continue to deliver great service for our customers at 31 million doorsteps up and down the country. I am sure our team are looking forward to the first day of operation as much as I am.”

Phil Oakley, vice president, leasing & development, Prologis UK, added: “Royal Mail’s decision to locate its largest UK parcel hub at DIRFT is great news for the local economy and the ecommerce companies located on Prologis DIRFT who rely on the company’s delivery services. Proximity to the new Royal Mail unit means companies can confidently extend order picking times and still achieve next day delivery for their customers.”

At the time it said: “The trends we are experiencing in letter and parcel volumes may slow after the pandemic but we do not expect them to reverse. There is an opportunity to benefit from the rapidly growing demand by customers for parcels and if Royal Mail can adapt its business quickly enough, we will be well positioned to meet customers’ demands for more and more items, to and from more people, delivered more frequently. But we need to move quickly.

“Currently, too many parcels are sorted by hand and we are failing to adapt our business to fundamentally lower letter volumes and are holding on to outdated working practices and a delivery structure that no longer meets customer needs.”

Daventry International Rail Freight Interchange (DIRFT)

I hate to be pedantic but that spells DIRFI.
Where does the T come from?
I could understand taking the T from freight to make DRIFT because that is a word, but adding a T to make DIRFT (which isn't a word)
is just silly.
What is wrong with this country? :cry

(Still happy about the smilies though :Very Happy. It is like every day is xmas day)

Never try to deny your true self.
Anyway it seems the author has replaced the word Terminal with Interchange for some inexplicable reason.

My issue is with the use of acronyms for places at all.
They work for organisations like NATO because unless you're on The Chase you don't need to know what it stands for.

Place names are designed to tell you where they are, DIRFT could be in Dundee or Dover. Only those in the know actually know where it is or what it does so what's the f***ing point in using an acronym?

Anyway DIRFT sounds like one of those quiet farts you try to get away with in company.

I'm wondering if the southern one will also be situated near a railway line as I believe the Warrington one and this one have the potential for rail access

As someone who in past life used to work with the biggest user of Acronyms they have used the T from the middle of Interchange:

Daventry International Rail Freight Interchange (DIRFT)

So upping the pedantry it should technically be DIRFt

It is actually closer to Rugby.
RIRFT. (Assuming the T is for terminal)

Warrington Rail Terminal is about 3 miles from Warrington Parcel Hub which is situated just off junction 8 of the M62.
Warrington Parcel Hub is a lot closer to Warrington Mail Centre which is on the same industrial estate about 400 yards away.

Not sure which way i’m shunting the pedantry but it is Terminal, i’m surprised that someone mistakenly putting “Interchange” in the article has created any sort of debate. The most basic internet search would reveal the correct wording. Remarkable when one considers the amount of intense Googling that occurs when someone wants to find reasons not to wear a face mask and starts cherry picking research notes to try and prove their argument, suddenly the business seems to be staffed by virologists !
