Right then,

2020 has been a bastard of a year to go to the cinema and see a movie. :cry But on the plus side, there's been some great films available to stream or buy on DVD/Blu-ray. :Very Happy

So having said that, what films would you recommend to others? :thumbup Or what films would you not recommend to others? :thumbdown

To jog your memory, here's a mashup of cinema's best of 2020 from the brilliant Sleepy Skunk.

Edge of darkness. 1985 TV series starring Bob Peck as a cop investigating the shooting of his daughter. Environmentalism/Gaia Theory, shady secret services, corrupt corporations and Willie Nelsons Red Headed Stranger lp.

Pendas Fen. 1974 play for today, utterly mental Alan Clark phantasmagoria concerning a young lads journey through nationalism, sexuality, religion, Elgar and more.

The Way of the Morris. Docu-ballad about the history of an Oxfordshire Morris side and the side that never returned from the Somme.

Rudeboy: The Story of Trojan Records. Get your ska on. Awesome!

One Man's Madness: The story of the band Madness told through the history of saxophonist Lee Kix Thompson. Brilliant!

Rare Exports. An alternative Xmas favourite, has the Real Santa been discovered in Finland? just don't get on Santas naughty list

Camt wait for the new versions of Dune and The Green Knight

The award-winning Edge of Darkness was a classic BBC six-part miniseries. I remember it so well. Along with Bob Peck (1945–1999), there was Ian McNeice, Charles Kay, Joe Don Baker, and the lovely Joanne Whalley.

The music by Michael Kamen and Eric Clapton was equally superb.

After all these years, I still vividly remember the scene of Ronald Craven (Bob Peck) in an abandoned room in some mines near Northmoor finding a telephone that still worked. He dials, waits ages, and somebody in a government office picks up to hear Craven shout: "Get me Pendleton!"

As with the 1985 BBC TV series, Martin Campbell directed the 2010 movie adaptation, which starred Mel Gibson. It was a letdown. :thumbdown

I just finished streaming this on Amazon Prime. A David Cronenberg movie I saw years ago and still enjoy watching it today.

A History of Violence (2005)

Wow!

I don't know if I agree with Zack Snyder's choice of the 4:3 aspect ratio, but apart from that it's an awesome film. :Applause

Anyway, check it out on NOW TV or Sky Cinema.

Turned the tele on few nights ago and Collateral (Cruise and Foxx) came on, though I'd watch 10 minutes and ended up watching the whole thing.

Such a good film 👍👍

Collateral (2004) is certainly a great film, with a decent soundtrack, too. It's one of my favorites in Michael Mann's filmography, which includes other greats like Heat, The Insider, Thief, Miami Vice, and The Last of the Mohicans.

The dialog in Collateral is excellent. :thumbup

Max (Jamie Foxx): "Hey. He, he, he fell on the cab. He fell, he fell from up there on the motherf*cking cab. Sh*t. I think he's dead."
Vincent (Tom Cruise): "Good guess."
Max: "You killed him?"
Vincent: "No, I shot him. Bullets and the fall killed him."

I'm not a big fan of Tom Cruise, but I do appreciate the fact that he's a consummate actor and to see him playing a bad guy is quite enjoyable.

The Chicago-born movie and TV director/producer/screenwriter is one of my favorites in the business. The 78-year old's next release is a biopic about Enzo Ferrari entitled Ferrari, starring Hugh Jackman.

Mann has directed, screen-written, and/or produced episodes for notable TV shows such as Miami Vice (1984-90), Starsky & Hutch (1975-77), Vega$ (1978-81), et al.

Here's a tribute of the movies Michael Mann has directed (the music is from soundtracks of the films):

Thief (1981)
The Keep (1983)
Manhunter (1986)
The Last of the Mohicans (1992)
Heat (1995)
The Insider (1999)
Ali (2001)
Collateral (2004)
Miami Vice (2006)
Public Enemies (2009)
Blackhat (2015)

The only film of Mann's I don't own is his multi-Emmy Award winning 1979 TV movie, The Jericho Mile.

Watched half of that Tenent, or did I watch it, or did I see myself watch it, did someone see me, it's all a bit backwards. Gave up half way through, or did I? I'll go back and see.
