Melverley flooding: Royal Mail teams up with local pub to deliver Christmas post

ROYAL Mail workers have been going the extra mile to ensure residents in areas impacted by floods near Oswestry can still get their deliveries in time for Christmas.

Postmen working in the area of Melverley had been unable to deliver to parts of the area over the past week as roads became increasingly flooded.

However Royal Mail workers joined forces with local pub, the Black Horse in Maesbrook, to come up with a solution to ensure people in the area get everything they need before Christmas Day.

A driver spent two hours at the pub’s car park on Wednesday morning, allowing people to walk to him to retrieve parcels, cards and other goods.

Mark Robinson, delivery office manager, said the solution was arranged by fellow delivery office manager Darren Viner, and said the pair felt it was important to get items to people at this time of year.

Mark said: “There was quite a lot of people who used the service so it was very successful.

“We spoke to the publican at the Black Horse yesterday and he was quite happy for us to park up there for a few hours this morning.

“We let people in the area know on social media pages and one of our delivery drivers went this morning with four trays full of mail, and came back with one.

“He had satchels as well and he delivered the majority of those as well, so our plan will be to do the same tomorrow for people.”

A delivery driver waited from 8am until 10am at the pub’s car park, and Mark says it may happen again on Christmas Eve.

He said: “Unfortunately with the way the weather has been, the floods have been building up down there and the mail has been building up with that.

“We simply couldn’t get there, and we are conscious with the amount of things we have here, that we probably had things on hand that people desperately want for Christmas.

“We know it’s important for people, so it was just a case of doing what we could and arranging it in the best way to give people the opportunity of getting them.”
