Royal Mail : 'No delivery delays reported in Wantage'

MORE households in parts of Oxfordshire hit out at Royal Mail after they were abandoned without post for weeks in the run up to Christmas.

People in Wantage and the surrounding area accused the local Royal Mail depot for a ‘postal backlog’, however, the service argued that no delays have been reported in the depot.

Last month the Oxford Mail reported of postal problems in Didcot and Wallingford, which began in the beginning of November.

However, since then the problem seems to have widened across Oxfordshire.

One Wantage resident, who wishes not to be named, commented: "Here we are experiencing similar delays.

"We seem to be getting only one or two deliveries per week.

"Last week, I received a letter dated November 17 and I am still waiting for an important letter that was posted First Class in Cumbria on November 26."

Following complaints from locals in Didcot and Wallingford, Conservative MP for Wantage David Johnston contacted the service in November.

In a statement to the MP Royal Mail confirmed that households were left without post because of a shortage of postal workers.

While Royal Mail did not address the reported problems in Wantage, a spokesperson commented: "Everyone at Royal Mail is working hard to deliver the most comprehensive and high quality service we can to all our customers, large and small.

"The combination of greatly increased uptake of online Christmas shopping, in no small part driven by the recent lockdown, and the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions mean that all delivery companies are experiencing exceptionally high volumes this year.

"We remain grateful to our customers for their patience and understanding as our dedicated workforce work hard to deliver these exceptional volumes."
