Why don't the cwu and RMG do an exercise asking how many would be interested in evr and the terms? If they got enough then they could get them paid off and gone then develop the business to be more successful in the future, win /win no?

Separately, we are reviewing the future regulatory framework for post. This will consider issues affecting the broader postal sector, as people’s reliance on parcels continues to grow. For example, we will look at continuing the requirements for Royal Mail to provide wholesale access to its network, and whether extra consumer protections are required in the parcels market. We will consult on these issues next year and conclude this review in 2022.

This is an extract from Of Com report and your see that this will be subject to consultation , the report is 148 pages long and they aim to conclude the review in 2022. Remember it will need primary and secondary legislation change as well.


The decision is not within the gift of either the CWU or Royal Mail to agree something as ultimately once every interested party has submitted their report from DPD , Yodel , Hermes TNT etc , OF COM will make a recommendation.

The CWU can campaign to stop any change and we have been successful in the past doing this. However there cannot be an agreement reached which guarantees the 6 day service after 2022.

So I’m terms the current discussions it is about no compulsory redundancies being extended and MTSF.

I realise some on here believe that talks should be done by now , but over the last two weeks there have been a lot of the companies time spent on the Half Year Results , Winning the test contract and the Of Com report.

Next week both parties believe we will get a potential agreement on a number of key issues , some of which will require further talks and further agreements.


Remember the issues range from the fact that current parcel growth is 4 years ahead or the previous projection and how this will be delivered not just on the current delivery but from 7 to 7.

What the future strategy for automating the parcels and the parcel hubs and the impact on Mail’s centres , RDCs and the issue that the only automation for sorting parcels only has 400 selections and yet there are 1400 delivery offices.


What is the productivity measure which will drive offices productivity and an incentive scheme. This include the issue of 100 BSi.

Revisions processes and how this is done including the final mile optimisation system which is the new geo route

How the use of new digital technology including AHDC , Resource scheduler is resolved

What happens to the current 600 disagreements which are in the framework over revisions.

These are not easy things to either resolve quickly or agree words to.

So when the union states it’s expects an agreement to be reached next week , a lot of work has already been done to predict that statement.

However these things can’t be rushed.

In terms of some saying there is going to be a sell out , let me know how many unions or indeed companies are on course to receive a pay deal and job security based on a company declaring a lost of 187 million only last week ?

Martin keeping peoples jobs is number 1 priority, id sooner keep a job with the same pay or even a slight cut than have no job at all.

If much of the £187 million loss is down to getting rid of these 2,000 managers whom many are probably about as much use to Royal Mail's bottom line as a chocolate teapot. That wasn't our decision so why bring that up as a bargaining tool?

I know the company has also spent millions on PPE and with staff going on sick with the virus. However unlike big Supermarkets, I suspect most companies have made an operating loss this year. Its never the best time to be making deals when there is pandemic going on. Perhaps it is probably a good idea to keep these negotiations on permanent "Interim"; a bit like this current chief that we have got in charge...

Of course it is.
Ofcom make recommendations on the minimal level of service requirements.
Nothing stops Royal Mail from offering more than the minimum or the CWU pushing for a higher level of service provision in agreements.

In an ideal world we'd get a big rise and a SWW, but in these times when so many people have lost or are going to lose their jobs, no compulsory redundancies has to be a priority

Part of these discussions is how Royal Mail can diversify from just being a parcel company including how Royal Mail can delivery 24/7 .

The Sunday operation would be on a smaller operation and based on volunteers.
