Is Royal Mail's parcel pick-up service a good idea?

As the pandemic sees online shopping surge, Royal Mail is rolling out its own parcel pick-up service on Wednesday. Will you be making use of it?

Royal Mail has decided to move to collecting parcels with its new Parcel Collect service. You’ll be able to use it Monday to Saturday at charge of 72p, plus any extra postage costs.

It says it’s one of the biggest changes to its daily delivery service since the postbox launched in 1852 – but will it be successful?

Nick Landon, Royal Mail’s Chief Commercial Officer, said:
“Royal Mail Parcel Collect is a fantastic step forward for all of our customers. It makes it easier to use our services than ever before.

Whether you’re up against time and working from home, making a return, selling online or sending a gift to make someone’s day, Royal Mail Parcel Collect is here to help.

The launch of Parcel Collect is part of our commitment to continuously make our services better and more convenient”

Royal Mail is clearly keen to push the benefits, and the feedback we’ve had so far generally looks positive, but there have been a few concerns raised that could impact on the service running smoothly.

While we’ve seen a number of others raising concerns over the impact on the posties themselves, From current workload to physically carrying the parcels away from your door (Royal Mail says it can collect up to five parcels per address), will they be able to cope?

On paper it looks like a brilliant idea, in practice it’s going to be a nightmare

I think that it should have been free as it encourages users to use RM rather than another courier. I also think that it
is better suited to rural duties but there shouldn't be a time limit for collecting items.
The time has come to stop turning the other cheek, time to stop shaking our heads in bitter dismay, time to stop mumbling our angry words.
The time has come for union.

Delivery Office Counters should also be used as " Drop Off Points " ,the counters should be OPEN to with in 15 Mins of the last Service to the Mail Centre , Stamps Etc should be available for those that need them
Click & Collect should also be available
Delivery Office Counters are an Wasted Asset

It's fine by me, it will cost a couple of loops like the workload is costing loops now.

Work your hours and go home.

Depends how it's implemented. Sadly there's always one brownie points/ bonus chasing whore screw to f**k it up.

Manager said it is what it is, deal with it parcels should only be small!!! So I collect my parcel, fortunately towards the end of my route, it was the size of a bed pillow, only weighed a couple of kg but filled up most of the trolley. We asked manager what happens if the collections are at the start of the walk when the trolley is already rammed full, his response do it on the way back then. Errr I've already walked 12+ miles and I'm now expected to go out of my way for collections and told no overtime of we go over. :(

Depends
If it's from someone elderly, pregnant, disabled etc then great
But if it's from someone overweight and lazy or a spotty teenage who can't be arsed, then no

The public already drop off parcels & mail at delivery office counters but they don't pay the 72p charge per item.
If you think about other RM charges such as the premium on SDs delivered on Saturdays or for underpayment of postage let alone the price of stamps its clearly obvious the 72p charge will not stay at that price for long.
Aside from this the new service takes revenue from post offices which, while not being part of RM as they once were, are still our 'front of house' along with the postboxes & we shouldn't be treating them like this.
Also if this new service does take off it will severely disrupt how we deliver the mail as there is not room in our vans for multiple additional new parcels. So for many reasons it is really bad decision with no plus points.
The views I express here are mine alone and do not represent the views of Royal Mail Group.

There are a number of other companies on the High Street already offering a full range of Postal Facilities , Mail Box Express to name but one , not only RM Services but numerous other courier services as well
Are such companies not also a threat to Post Offices

What so you just work your hours and even though you have to collect parcel you then cut-off because the post is it taking you 10 to 15 minutes extra every day it’s not gonna work is it people just end up doing more work as usual unpaid
