A suspected thief has been arrested over alleged thefts just days after being released from prison.

At about 9.10am on Saturday, a postman was doing his rounds in Byker when his vehicle was targeted while it was parked on Raby Street.

A witness reported that two men had smashed the window of the van and removed parcels from inside the vehicle.

Police carried out a search and after speaking to a number of witnesses in the area a 48-year-old man was arrested in connection with the theft.

On Thursday, a 34-year-old man was also arrested by police on suspicion of carrying out the raid - just days after being released from prison.

Detective Inspector Mal Stratton, of Northumbria Police, said: “Our response officers and neighbourhood policing team did a fantastic job on Saturday in the early stages of our response to this theft.

“They immediately set about gathering witness accounts and through their local knowledge they were able to identify two primary suspects.

“One of those men was quickly brought into custody while the second man has been arrested today.

“It is only a matter of days since the second suspect was released from prison and it hasn’t taken long for him to find his way back into custody.

“Our investigation into this incident will continue and it may not be long before these men receive a court summons in the post.”

Both men have been released under investigation pending further enquiries..

Anyone with information about the theft, or who witnessed two men on bicycles acting suspiciously at the time of the offence, is asked to contact police.

Isn’t it sad that that’s the first thing most of us will think.
