How does Royal Mail operate airmail?

Post by noreal »

I regularly send out a lot of international parcels and I've begun to wonder how does Royal Mail actually operate airmail, what sort of contracts do they have and with who?

Before knowing anything about it, I assumed they had their own fleet of aircraft and didn't rely on anything else - which I believe is not true. I then found out that they had contracts with passenger airlines and mail often goes in the leftover baggage hold of these aircraft. I was then told this wasn't true - and that RM only had contracts and agreements with British Airways, which also makes sense but has confused me a great deal. How does the actual process work?

This little piece of history from Royal Mail is about four years old but the last paragraph is still significant today.
Today Royal Mail’s Heathrow Worldwide Distribution Centre handles all international air mail leaving the UK, dispatching around 700,000 items a night, using seven miles of conveyor systems. The fully automated centre has a floor area of 40,000 square metres, around the size of six football pitches. Royal Mail exports to 221 destinations using scheduled flights of 55 airlines from London Heathrow and London Gatwick airports.
Various airline companies are contracted with Royal Mail to deliver items internationally. Cargo space is sold to Royal Mail for the distribution of international items.
