A resident has called for a post box to be reinstated on a housing estate in Sudbury – seven years after it was removed.
The decision to get rid of the post box from Chaucer Road prompted an outcry from residents who campaigned to see the facility replaced in 2013.
Gerald Prentice, from Gloucester Way, has urged Royal Mail to install a new post box on the Chaucer Estate to support a large number of elderly residents who live on the housing development.
Mr Prentice has raised concern that, due to the lack of a postal facility, elderly people have been forced to walk further afield, or drive, to post their mail.
“There is a large number of senior residents here,” said Mr Prentice. “And the older generation still post a lot of letters.”
Mr Prentice said he often found the post box in Priory Road, which is the closest facility to the housing development, at full capacity, so had to make a longer trip into town to the post office branch at WH Smith.
While he is able to make the journey, Mr Prentice highlighted that some elderly people would struggle.
“I’m physically fit, but other people aren’t,” said the 66-year old, adding that not all residents had the option of sending emails as an alternative.
“There are lots of people who don’t have a computer,” said Mr Prentice. “Plus, it’s nice to receive birthday cards. “I have five grandchildren and I make a point of sending Christmas cards.”
When approached by the Free Press for a comment, Royal Mail failed to respond.

A postbox was stolen on my walk months ago but it still has not been replaced. DOM has chased it up but no joy as yet.
