The Royal Family is guaranteed loyal service from the Royal Mail, but one postman went above and beyond the call of duty to deliver letters to Prince Edward and his wife, Sophie.
I can disclose that the couple’s local postie was plunged into a sinkhole while doing his rounds in a van on the Bagshot Park estate where they live in Surrey.
His van needed to be rescued from the gaping cavity, said to be 10ft deep. ‘It was very dramatic,’ a source tells me.
'He went straight in — there was nothing he could do.
‘It’s lucky that it was him and not the Queen who was driving along the estate road.
‘Apparently, there were some soldiers on the estate and they tried to lift the van out, but couldn’t. In the end, a recovery vehicle had to come and pull him out.’
The postman, who was not injured, is understood to have been forced to wait five hours before he was able to leave.
The source adds: ‘The driver is a bit embarrassed about all the fuss, but the main thing is he’s ok.’
The Earl and Countess of Wessex, have lived at the Mansion House at Bagshot since their wedding in 1999. The Queen’s youngest son and his wife use about a quarter of the 57 rooms in the rambling Tudor gothic-style mansion with their children, Lady Louise Windsor, 16, and James, 12, whose title is Viscount Severn.
A royal source tells me that Edward and Sophie are not responsible for the sinkhole because it did not appear in their driveway but on land belonging to the Crown Estate.
The Royal Mail confirms the incident last Friday.
‘A Royal Mail vehicle became stuck in a minor sinkhole in the Surrey area,’ a spokesman tells me.
‘The vehicle was subsequently recovered. No one was injured.’
A Buckingham Palace spokesman declines to comment.

I delivered their once as a courier, got lost. Guy came out and directed me to go a rather roundabout way for the delivery... " the Earl doesn't care for signs ".
