Wisbech postman alive thanks to Magpas Air Ambulance

Wisbech Postie Jimmy Watson is lucky to be alive after collapsing at work earlier this year with a heart attack.

But thanks to the swift response of the NHS East of England Ambulance Service paramedics followed by further expert care by a team from the charity-run Magpas Air Ambulance he lived to tell the tale.

Now his long-term school friend Nick Johnson is raising funds as a thank-you to the air ambulance service that saved Jimmy’s life and got him to the specialist Royal Papworth Hospital.

It was the start of his working day at Wisbech sorting office in January that Jimmy started to feel unwell. He began to feel unusually bloated and uncomfortable around his chest, “as if he needed to burp” - in his words.

He then began too feel very hot, sweaty and dizzy and decided something was definitely “not right”. A chat with workmates ended in a 999 call which saw the saw the swift arrival of an ambulance crew.

When they arrived it was to discover Jimmy unconscious but they managed to successfully resuscitate him. He had gone into cardiac arrest, which meant he needed urgent hospital care.

Magpas Air Ambulance were then called to his aid. Jimmy was conscious and talking when Magpas Doctor Antonia Hazlerigg and Magpas Critical Care Paramedic Sally Boor arrived bringing the expertise of a hospital emergency department to him.

Whilst preparing to move him safely to the helicopter, Jimmy went into another cardiac arrest and had to once again be resuscitated.

By the time he was loaded into the air ambulance he had suffered two further cardiac arrests and the Magpas team administered advanced drugs to help stop it happening again.

But once airborne Jimmy, who is in 50s, suffered four more cardiac arrests and each time the expertise of Dr Antonia and Paramedic Sally saved him.

Weeks after his life-saving helicopter flight Jimmy and his wife Alison, were able to meet one of his life-saving heroes, Dr Antonia, with a visit to the Magpas Air Ambulance Operations Base.

Asked how it felt to meet Dr Antonia, Jimmy said, “It’s amazing to thank one of the people who helped save my life – I can’t believe it. Words can’t sum up how I feel to meet Antonia. All I can say is, not all heroes wear capes!”

Alison said: “Jimmy is larger than life; an outgoing, busy person who lives life to the full. He’s got a lot of recovering to do, but he’s a very tough, very lucky man – and I’m so proud of him.”

Magpas Air Ambulance can only deliver this critical care and continue to save lives like Jimmy’s – thanks to generous donations from the communities within which the charity serves.

I’m better than I was thanks. I took medical retirement on May 1st however. I re evaluated things and although I won’t have so much money you can’t buy time
