Posties lined the streets to pay their respects to a former Beckenham colleague who died from coronavirus earlier this month.

Martin Calver, 64, passed away with family by his side at Lewisham Hospital on April 6, having worked in the Post Office from the age of 16 until his retirement four years ago.

Around 40 socially-distanced work associates waited in the rain outside Honor Oak crematorium yesterday, clapping as his coffin arrived for the funeral.

Son Scott Calver, 31, said; “We were overwhelmed by how many people came out and stood in the rain for half-an-hour just to pay their respects.

"It helps show that even in these tough times, humanity is still there.

"Even as we drove from Beckenham to Honor Oak, someone mentioned seeing Crystal Palace footballer Andros Townsend take his hat off in a show of respect.

"He had a proper send-off."

Postal workers in a Southwark depot also held a minute's applause.

Along with Scott, Mr Calver leaves behind wife of 42 years Pauline, daughter Beth and one grandchild.

A "local character", he was often seen in The Chancery and formerly managed a number of football teams in the area.

Scott suspects his dad caught coronavirus in mid March, after attending a friend's birthday party.

In the following weeks, family members began to display coronavirus symptoms.

On March 29, Martin began to have some difficulties breathing, and was taken to Lewisham Hospital for assessment.

Despite seemingly recovering over following days with the help of oxygen, his condition deteriorated suddenly on April 6.

"We were called in as he was taking his last breaths," Scott said.

"We were lucky to be there with him, holding his hand, talking to him.

"It was all a shock really."

Only 10 people were allowed to the funeral, also held in Honor Oak, which was live-streamed for family members who were unable to attend.
