Coronavirus and sick pay.

Sure, this could play a part. I'm not for one second going to suggest that they have tested every single person that has contracted covid-19.

That said, the Chinese definition of "mild" cases (which they stated as around 80%), was everything other than what we'd consider intensive care, and included things like pneumonia, which somewhat skewed the expectations. South Korea, who have been the most proactive in testing people, are also reportedly hospitalising 40% of positive cases. Italy gives the best advance warning of what to expect here, they're already out of ventilators, having to prioritise using them on the patients with the best chance of survival.

So, the point was, in the context of the discussion, that indeed, restrictions similar to that in Italy are coming to us... This particular virus will cripple the NHS otherwise.

Woody's point that they have hospitilised more of the early cases, is also true, as this is almost certainly the case during the "containment" phase. However, when this starts to peak, many that would normally recieve hospital care, simply won't be able to as we'll be beyond capacity, and then some.

Seeing as the UK has seen what has been happening in Italy, surely the government have hired more staff or have volunteers lined up as well as selected hundreds of buildings around the country to use as make shift hospitals and bought more equipment to help the large number of vulnerable patients.

My sister works for the local council, they have given all their drivers bottles of hand sanitizers, small gesture, but a nice touch, she asked me if RM had dished anything out to its workers? :left:

I genuinely think Royal Mail hates its employees. I can't see any other explanation for their actions/inactions.

They are probably viewing this as a good way to get rid of a lot of people who are maybe on their final warnings. Cheaper than VR

RM wouldn't be so stupid. It would be a PR disaster. Not to mention the government would probably have something to say about any company that sought to dismiss anyone over this. It would have a detrimental impact on the countries ability to contain this disease and future ones if people thought they would get the sack if they went off sick.

Our delivery office has a cleaner who has two hours to clean the place. Two floors, three toilets ,empty rubbish and sweep up etc. She does her best but it is not long enough. I asked if she had been given any advice on extra cleaning on door knobs and other items that everyone touches. U surprisingly the answer was no. :arrrghhh

I agree any normal thinking company may feel that way but the Royal Mail treat people with disdain. There are several disabled chaps in our office who work their arse off and are treated abysmally at times. If they see an opportunity they may wait till this has died down a bit but they will wait for you !

Even prior to coronavirus I've believed this to be the case, it goes deeper than just the usual case of an employer treating their employees with contempt, it's like there's a real hatred for us from senior management.

I've been on sick for a few days with fever, headaches, and a cough. Still not 100% but starting to get better and going to try go back in tomorrow, but now the government has said anyone with fever or cough should self isolate for 7 days. I've still got a cough and mild fever symptoms, I'm assuming I'm currently on full sick pay, if I self isolate because of government advice will I be put on SSP?

The new advice is simply to stay at home and self isolate for the first 7 days after your symptoms started, not after they finish. You can self-certify for those first 7 days.

The new advice in full from Public Health England is here

I would. Have a full week off from when your symptoms started (not from today) and then self cert for that period due to your fever, headaches and cough.

Thry have told the new guys at ours who have been in under a year that they will get sick pay if they have to have time off with this. Has anyone else heard this? I don’t trust it.
