Exhaust Fumes from Vans

Since started in 2011 I've noticed that most winters alot of colleagues go outside to warm the vans up to defrost the vans. While I haven't got an issue with that. But standing next to them while loading the van I can smell those toxic fumes entering my lungs. It's horrible. This isn't a moan - I'm just concerned that if we continue to breath these toxic fumes in we could end up with breathing problems. The fumes are far worse than what come from our own private car exhaust. Anybody else notice how bad our vans are with from emissions from our fleet vechiles? Royal mail should be doing more to check that these vechile emissions are normal for road use.

Probably best to start engine to demist windows for 5-10 minutes & then turn engine off & load van then, I never load van with engine running.

You should not be breathing those dirty diesel fumes, certain death, I just put the blowers & window wipers on full soon clears the frost, I have a youth that thinks he can vape, because the sticker in the van is a cigarette, it stinks, not giving me popcorn lung.

I always leave my van enignition off when loading it's just others leave there's on...you can't exactly say "sorry mate turn ya engine off cause it's causing me breathing problems" they would just take the pi**

What's even worse is when one of the mechanics does a DPF regen on one of the vans in the yard... leaves it sat there revving away at 4k rpm for 10 minutes burning off all the noxious s**t that has built up in the DPF.

The other day I could smell the fumes from one being done as soon as I got out of my car... parked 200 yards away from the D.O.!!!

Shouldn't RM be investing more into electric vehicles anyway. Think of the cost savings in fuel, and with the mileages most of us cover it would be feasible. Also, it would be good PR to be seen to be investing, cutting carbon footprint blah..blah..blah. Can't see much of the proposed 1.8 billion going towards that though.

Just where would they park them all to charge the batteries when there's a good few DOs that don't have enough parking space as it is

Well, with the proposed changes and the assumption most Posties would be carrying less large parcels, would it need to be a van? Obviously some parts rurals etc. What about these trikes they were trialling? Must be cheaper, and would be easier to park, taking up less space. I know they're single seat, but twin seat could be made, if we're still going to do the shared van idea. Or is it going to go back to singleton duties?
Makes you think the old way was better before P&L.

Electric vehicles cost three times their combustion counter parts; then you've got to install the charging points to go with them; then you've got the issue of longevity, nobody really knows how the batteries (the most expensive part) will last on these things. Hence why in 2018 there were 172,000 zero emissions vehicles registered in the UK out of a total of somewhere in the region of 30 million vehicles. The figures have probably got better in the last year, but I saw a report the other day saying it was either 30 or 40 to 1 SUVs being sold for every electric car so I doubt it's much better!

I think it's scandalous that some people leave their vans running for 20 or 30 minutes. Totally unnecessary, hazardous to our health as well as the planet.

I scrape my windows with a scraper. After loading it just takes a minute or two of the engine running and blower on and the windows are fine.

well said . How ridiculous was it to invest in diesel vans ? Many "regening" in our yard , pumping out very toxic Nox particulates .
