I'm assuming you're an Engineer, who obviously doesn't use the stop buttons. I Think you'll find that you're legal competence arguement would only make the case against someone breaking H&S procedures worse. Safety features put into anyones job are there not only to protect the employee but to protect others around the foolish employee who thinks they know better. If you are an Engineer can you please put this to bed with a simple yes or no. Are you (by "you" I mean Engineers, not operators), supposed to press the stop button when you open a cover on the IMP machine? If it's "no" then really we are bickering about something that has gone way off topic. If it's "yes" and you don't do it, you're acting foolish! Simple.
Can you explain to me where this thread / debate fits into the greater scheme of things at the moment?

Now i feel this is all about H&S in the work place and TMAN i find the fact you or anybody else in your MC dont challenge the MCM and screws below to this issue... I STATE AGAIN UNDER H&S and RM and Union agreement... "NOBODY SHOULD WORK ON A IMP. LSM, MTT. CFC, any MECH without passing the TPM basic training.. To RUN a Piece of MECH you need advanced training... So this is a union matter and H&S matter for everyone.... If the workers wont help themselves then RM wont until someone loses a arm or worse.... Lovejoy there is more to this site than :lfo :cfo . No one is making you read this thread and I am quite happy for you to ignore it if you feel so strongly. We are all entitled to post and discuss many different and diverse topics on here, take a look at all the different threads and forums, or just ask POSTMAN. Obviously, the 0.1% who are interested have managed to bring this thread to four pages now. As for interest in the job, no not really. However, interest in my job, it's security and my safety at work, yes, definatlely! You are far too interested in the job!

Way off on a tangent now, but I don't work on IMPS (I've already mentioned MTTs prior to this and you don't get MTTSs and IMPs in the same office) so I couldn't tell you the laid down SSoWs for IMPs.Are you (by "you" I mean Engineers, not operators), supposed to press the stop button when you open a cover on the IMP machine? If it's "no" then really we are bickering about something that has gone way off topic. If it's "yes" and you don't do it, you're acting foolish! Simple]
I can't disagree with your sentiments; RM staff should always (but rarely do) adhere to the guidelines. My point is that MY job is vastly different to your job, and so MY SSoWs are also vastly different, therefore what YOU should do isn't necessarily appropriate for what I should do.
The cover interlocks should be more than adequate to protect operators from any danger, so pressing stop buttons in addition shouldn't be required, although RM is quite rightly covering itself by saying do this, as there have been occasions on the CFCs where the software has decided to keep the machine running with the cover up (as the Japs do).
That said, some tasks require the machine running with the covers open, so that's what I do.

People who think like that (and there's lot of them) are a bigger threat to our future than Messrs Ward Leighton and Crozier combined.
Listless apathy will see us all out of work.

Re: 99.9%
I can only say again, you don't have to be TPM-anything to be an operator, and anyway TPM is supposed to encourage performance rather than safety.L Tommo wrote:Now i feel this is all about H&S in the work place and TMAN i find the fact you or anybody else in your MC dont challenge the MCM and screws below to this issue... On reflection, some shifts in our APC have no TPM operators.......

f**k me!!! Listen to the lot of you. Its absolute bollox this thread. I'm a driver in a mail centre an see the imp crew regularly. I've got a nice little number, maybe my meal relief aint what it should be, but i got 3 10min breaks inbetween collections. These imp operators do a little arm leaning admittedly. I worked on an OCR years ago. FFS, give the imp guys a break, there glued to a machine, pretty much standing allday with deadlines. If they fail, the whole office fails. Have a look on the manual letters, peeps never sort for a minute at a time without some chat or head spinning event.
I often think of the loneliness off the road, but it compares not at all to the mind numbing mental breaking experience of my fellow imp operators, who work fairly hard for their money.
GET OVER YOURSELFS AND GO AN MOAN ABOUT SOMETHING ELSE. END OF!

Another reply to a boring issue. Was on overtime, primary packets 6pm-9pm. Was waiting for the IMP crew to finish (breakdown cost 20mins runtime), waiting for them to tie up, push mail to the primary and roads for dispatch. Was doing fukkal waiting so went down there, TO HELP MY MATES who shared a picket line with me a couple o months ago. Never been TPMd but had experience on LSM's. They was more than happy for me to tie up. Machines was stopped, just tieing up, so i joined in. Tied up 25bundles an everyone happy. No Health/safety issues, no chance of me getting caught in a machine, just postman working to get a job done and go home at 9pm. Funny how so many people stood and watched waitin. Dont talk about lazy imp operators, talk about the lazy sh***s that just wait and cant be bothered to help.

As an imp operator I don't consider this to be a boring issue. I do not agree fully with the topic starter but I do think it has raised some excellent points regarding H and S.moon71 wrote:Another reply to a boring issue. Though I commend your initiative in helping the imp staff out I would like to point out that moving you on to the imp section should have been a managerial decision and not one that you took upon yourself.
I personally would not have wanted you to help had it of been a choice you had come to yourself.
I am of the opinion that we should all do the job properly, I will do what is expected of me and no more, if the shift fails, then that is a failing of the management.
This falls for me into the same category as carrying 2 boxes at a time, pushing more than one piece of equipment and not pressing a blue stop button when clearing a jam on an imp.
Lets do the job we are meant to do and lets do it properly.

Ahh right, you must be correct because you type in capitals.
I see.
Thing is, you're still confusing basic operators training with TPM training, and "shouting" doesn't change that.
Sorry, but you're still wrong.
I must have missed your poll, maybe I was the 0.1% who wasn't asked?
