We recently had a meeting and practically no hours are given out on a morning now. I understand managers are getting pressured by their managers but I wanted to know if this is now affecting your office??. Occasionally I can cover a row from another duty on overtime and we have regular lads that want ALL the overtime and run round like headless chickens (ruining the job), getting back at 12 oclock and then ghost overtiming til 8pm but still finishing for around 2.30pm. We also had the fact that any ghost overtime will be stopping, but to me it's a load of rubbish. Managers rely on these lads to run around and all they seem to care about is a clear office come close.
you say postiewhite ALL the full time lads want all the ovvys ?? not doing to bad yeself mate 8-10 hours a week ,cover a row on OVERTIME seems like ye moaning about full timers doing this and that when ye not doing to bad yeself same old partimers moaning about why he doing this that . honest partimers have ruined the job I think most will disagree and yes I am full time. your contract is part time correct ? well work partime your the one helping royal mail by coming in early etc am probably wrong but we all have an opinion :cuppa :cuppa :so there :so there

Posties who 'ghost' like the example you give must realise that kind of thing has to end and that they are basically ******* up the business for everyone.

Royal Mail couldn't survive without overtime.
A lot of members couldn't survive without overtime.
It will survive without ghost overtime.
Some members won't like having to actually work the overtime but their bank accounts will ultimately win that battle.and if they don't someone else will take home the pay.

As Woody says, in the end if posties need the money they will crack first. Why is it different than in years previous? Just take a look around a typical office nowadays, the number of part timers who need the extra hours and are willing to do the work for just hours worked is growing all the time.
You might still get the odd day when the manager is desperate to cover a duty to get some ghost OT but these days in general that isnt happening so often.
In our office, we have also had many hours cut from indoor, yet deliveries are still getting complete due to either people coming in early for free or rushing around, or the fact their duties are achievable. I don't think anyone cuts off on a regular basis, the only thing that may get left is the lapsing, so RM are getting close to maximum efficiency (hours wise) out of everyone, or at least much closer to it than they have ever done before.

I think we all need to realise that ALL Delivery Offices are Different A lot of members always sound so surprised that things are done differently in other DOs.

Due to state of the Business (and the fact that the Managers didn't get their Bonus this year) most DOMs have had a fire lit under them by the Sector Managers. Of course all the problems in RM are caused by us Lazy Posties... and so that's where most of these incompetent idiots try and save money. :arrrghhh We've had the Riot Act read reference Pressure Overtime, but haven't had an all out ban yet! A lot of us have been told to start later, the theory being that we won't need to wander about collecting mail before the IPS sorters have finished (because if we have no mail we obviously stand around doing FA)

I believe it's true that we have a lot more PTers nowadays, and they are always going to be keen to earn some extra cash. Seeing as how we can't rely on the integrity of our colleagues to share out any available overtime there really needs to be a system in place that would share out the OT fairly. :hmmmm I won't be holding my breath for the management to introduce one, but if you feel strongly about it you should (with the Unit Reps support) be pushing for one in your DO. :thumbup

A lot of managers need to be reminded that there is no such thing as "Swings & Roundabouts" when it comes to Over Time. If you finish early one day it's up to your DOM to find some more work. I try not to give them any wiggle room, and on light days save some Households to throw off, or fill the van up etc. :thumbup Admitedly it's going to be hard to try and claim 30 mins OT when you finished an hour early the day before. :cuppa

I believe it is possible Bluesman. Obviously the main mover has got to be the CWU Unit rep (so if he's useless it's probably a non starter, although you could go over his head to the Area Delivery Rep). :no no It requires a Transparent System, where the ammount of OT worked by EVERYONE in the DO is simply listed on the notice board. Then the following week the available OT can be allocated to someone who didn't get any. :hmmmm

I know it's a BIG Ask, but if enough people are pissed off with the same half a dozen guys getting all the OT then you've got to make the effort. As with so many things in RM..... nobody's going to do it for you.... you have to do it yourself. :thumbup

The unfair OT practices obviously hit the PT guys harder, and I am not a believer in the, "If you didn't want Part Time you shouldn't have taken the job" argument. :no no I can also see the point of view that some might have if they're FT and a PT guy is getting all the OT.... Hence the Aggregated Over Time List, and a Fair Allocation. However it is very galling, as a PTer on a short contract, to be lectured to by a FTer about getting their OT cut, and how hard up they are. :Boo hoo! I know because I had it done to me! :cuppa

I don't really bother with overtime anymore. In our section, the same favourites have already got their day off's overtime duty planned for the next week in advance before anyone else. And the same thing tends to happen in the morning. The manager goes to them first before they then eventually resort to anybody else for the scraps that the ar$e lickers don't want. Thats when our part-timer's might get asked.

In my DO, the large majority don't want overtime, so its the same people who the overtime, and this time of year with so many people on holiday, managers are having to beg people to work their days off

Management are clueless, really.
No.
If you had agreed to do an extra half walk (4 hours) on Wednesday but returned to the office 2 hours early, then you would only get 2 hours overtime.
Concur with the last sentiment though.

And that would be a great idea for stopping ghost overtime. Surely If posties knew that was the case, why on earth would you come back early?? If you were quick or had a duty that you could blitz in 2 and a half hours hours, then you would either pace yourself round or at the very least stay out until 20 minutes to your finish time, which will then give you time to drop your packets off and hand your keys and logbook in.
