hi everyone........i work in glasgow mail centre and i am totally fed up with the health and saftey in here ,it seems to be non-exsistent,we have managers constantly breaking it and not to mention our own people who do the same thing
and when all this is reported to reps who then tell relevant people (mail centre manager..mike hewitt) and he says he will deal with it(which i believe..to be fair ...he does) but the managers dont listen to him and keep doing what they do,also same goes when we see managers doing our work (which is just about everyday),could the union do more???

By the way heard our very own Mr james jack aka the virus,is moving to edinburgh mail centre nae luck edinburgh
also one of our cheifs has now gone to somewher in ayrshire again nae luck ayrshire :Applause :Applause :Applause

Well, people will be people. The only thing you can ever do is make sure you are doing what is correct and hope that others will follow your example.

It depends on what forms of Health and Safety they are breaking. If it is putting you or any of your collegues in danger then you have the right not to work in that area. Make sure a log is kept of what is happening. Bring it to the attention of your local and area reps. If the manager's concerned continue to break H&S then further action should be taken against them. If all else fails and it is a sever breach of H&S then you can always consider speaking to the HSE.

It needs a death at work there. Then the HSE will soon sort things out.

The HSE only cover Royal Mail peripatetic work (outdoor on delivery issues) whilst it is the responsibility of the local Environmental Health Officers who cover indoor work.

HSE would probably be interseted in that too, especially if something went seriously wrong.

Afraid HSE have got their own problems at the mo.

HARDLY SEEN ENFORCING.

FATALITIES UP 241 worker deaths in 2006/07 compared to 217 in 2005/06, an 11 per cent increase.

FATALITY RATE UP 0.8 workers killed per 100,000 in 2006/07 compared to 0.72 per 100,000 in 2005/06, a 10 per cent increase.

INSPECTIONS DOWN 41,496 HSE inspections in 2006/07 compared to 54,717 in 2005/06, a 24 per cent decrease.

INSPECTION RATE DOWN HSE enforced workplaces in 2006/07 could expect an inspection on average once every 14.5 years, compared to once ever 7 years in 2001/02.

INVESTIGATIONS DOWN the proportion of major injuries investigated by HSE fell to 11 per cent in 2005/06 from 13 per cent in 2004/05.

PROSECUTIONS REMAIN LOW 1,056 offences prosecuted by HSE in 2005/06 compared to 1,320 in 2004/05, a fall of 20 per cent. Convictions dropped by 10 per cent. Provisional figures for 2006/07 show a minor improvement in prosecutions and convictions, but the last two years remain the worst on record.

NOTICES REMAIN LOW 6,593 enforcement notices issued by HSE in 2005/06 compared to 8,471 in 2004/05, a fall of over 22 per cent. Prohibition notices were down by 18 per cent and improvement notices by 24 per cent. The provisional total notices figure rose to 8,071 in 2006/07, but the last two years remain the worst on record.
