It's worth listening to this BBC Radio 4 money box programme about the consequences when thousands of steel workers transferred out of their DFB scheme.

I've turned it off when they said someone gave up a pension of £35000 a year

I was around during the pensions miss selling era when many members of staff were seduced by some incredible sounding figures. No doubt this person saw roll of bank notes in front of his eyes but lets not blame the victim.
Many financial advisors walked away with huge sums in the full knowledge that they had altered many pensions members future financial security.
