Thank you Chris413.
Not sure how effective the union rep is tbh. He says all the right things on the floor, but things seem to change to side with management when in a meeting with the boss. It's quite odd. Not ever experienced this before.
Grievance hotline? Where do I find the number and how do I go about it? I'm only seven weeks into the job and the manager has been on at me incessantly about my time while offering me nothing in terms of support, assistance, a different less complicated and parcel-heavy route etc.
You are so right about the cards - silly junk mail items that you know will end up in the bin but you still have to deliver them regardless. I have around 500 doors on my walk pretty much all of which have gates and paths. I am going as fast as I can but still not fast enough apparently.

I made a spreadsheet showing all of the hours worked and the hours paid. Boss man not interested. Advised he would have a meeting with me today (with union rep) to go through it with my pay slip for this week but that never happened. Instead he refused to honour the 95 extra minutes I worked today. If I had returned on time with undelivered stuff I would probably be sacked by now.

Dammit they're only open until 5 and not open again until Monday. I might be out of a job by then!

If there's no workplace coach there ( and there should be) ,is there a senior postie there who you get on with and who doesn't take s**t from management. The tactics these managers use is appalling, it really is. Tell him that this is causing you stress and he has a duty of care for every employee there. Mental health is massive at the moment, this should make him listen. Tell him you have rang 'feeling first class' to talk over your anxiety that he is bringing on. It's a free service for counselling, that should make him take notice. Gotta stand up for yourself coz once you start taking s**t it'll keep coming.

cookiewise wrote:Without a doubt, the volume of mail has really increased this week. It's also been super heavy what with all the Smyths catalogues etc. Does management acknowledge this? Of course not!! Quite a shock for this newbie. My fitbit says I am doing between 3000 and 4000 more steps than before - so my run is at least 15km each day. IS that a lot? I am unable to complete by 1pm. It is impossible. I rushed today, did my best, but was still over by 1hr 35mins. Boss has refused to honour the overtime.
So it looks like I either work for free or am taken to task on "performance issues". He is trying to suspend a postie at another office for cutting off, citing "willful delay of mail". The man is a real snake. Assumes the worst in everyone. It's disgusting.
So as far as I can see it's catch22 for me and I am sick of it. This is my seventh week in the job. Boss has offered no support, no work coach and no training.
Also, RM has swindled me out of over 8hrs overtime. How does management get away with bullying practices like this?
Am considering leaving now. It is a horrible place to work.
This is completely out of order, you should speak to union rep and tell him how stressed you are and may go Sick with stress and say it’s due to work stress from being underpaid and your not coming back until he pays you for the work younhbe done. Put in a grievance, contact the union rep and if he’s no good go above him to area rep.
When I started I couldn’t understand how you got paid more to go slower I loved it, I went slower and slower until the manager took me in the office and told me to speed up and try and get done on time or I’d be out as s on a trial. 11 years on il go quick every now m then but mostly just do it ‘properly’ safety first. Rushing around Makes me not enjoy the job just to be home a
Little earlier.

My day was ok, 1540 finish on a Saturday which is 5 minutes before I should finish. It sort of sucks but but I’m use to it now. No accidents, good weather, not too many 739s written so a generally happy day.

Had to put a p739 through for a customer who didn't answer the door, I finish the block of flats and then she's waiting at the bottom of the stairs waving the card and said "You didn't even knock, just put this through?" :arrrghhh :arrrghhh Strange thing was, her neighbor across the hall opened their door after I knocked, because they thought I was knocking on their door! The knock was heard across the hall but the customer says I didn't even knock :chuckle. I find it infuriating when customers accuse me of not knocking or ringing the doorbell.
if that happens i just keep it matter of fact "yes i did knocK" they can argue all they like, i just keep my cool and repeat that i did knock / ring.
Strange how some customers can't hear you knocking on their door, and ringing the bell... BUT can hear the letter box flap opening... and open the door at this point. I'm sure they just don't open the door in case it's the Baliffs! :Very Happy Tip I learnt... If there's no answer.... pop the mail through the letterbox before you start writing the 739. (Then they know it's the Postie and may well open the door, saving you valuable minutes)! :cuppa

SWW introduced.
Surprisingly the world didn't end.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

What a strange day. Very, very few packets, looked easy so I took my lapsing. Lapsing had way more packets than the rest of my duty!

Then I realised I was going to nearly every damned house.

Monday is not a good barometer of resourcing deficiency.
In most offices everything is already under the roof and waiting to be sorted.
Wednesday will be the first real test of both delivery office SWW and mailcentre SWW.

We have had several 'things' happen so far in the lead up to SWW and after:
1) preceding SWW we have had lots of flats dumped in the sleeve Yorks with the parcels.
2) preceding SWW we have had several days when the first lot of sequenced trays of letter have not arrived with the first lorry of mail. Apparently this is when the job isn't done properly and all the Yorks haven't been brought to the loading Bay. Our usual drivers know about this happening and will seek out all the missing yorks and load them on to the lorry. If we get different drivers this doesn't happen and the york of sequenced letters has to be brought to us later in the morning.
3) Post SWW we have had the sequenced mail either shuffled a bit so it isn't quite in order or sections of sequenced letters have been put in the wrong trays.
The views I express here are mine alone and do not represent the views of Royal Mail Group.
