Hi all.

Has any of you ever been arrested for riding your bikes "furiously" ?

I got pulled by 2 coppers on the high street and was told that I could be charged under a 1861 law for "Cycling furiously". I was hammering it a tad but for fks sake.....

They let me off with a warning so I'm not on the DNA database yet.

Just wondered.....

Sorry, but the term "riding furiously" males me think of someone really pissed off cycling down the road shouting at everyone and everything. Wouldn't "riding too fast" suffice

Going back about 15 years i did nearly run over Douglas Hurd on my bike, with two hench men behind him.

Maybe the plod in question were royal mail managers in drag..lets face it they also have sweet F.A better to do with thier time!! and i'm surprised you weren't taken down the conduct code for excessive use of royal mail tyres/grease/shoe rubber...

Regulation 50 makes it quite clear that the cyclist is subject to the same laws as any other motorist in being required to obey all traffic signs and traffic lights. This means no passing red lights! Interestingly, cyclists are not bound by the speed limit (with one or two local exceptions), though it is probably a good idea to comply anyway. There is an offence of "cycling furiously" (not mentioned in the Highway Code) which could be used to cover speeding if appropriate. A cyclist is only encouraged by regulation 51 to: keep both hands on the handlebars; keep both feet on the pedals; ride no more than two abreast (single file on narrow or busy roads); ride close to another vehicle; be careful carrying anything that may affect balance; or be considerate to other road users.

I have seen it before plus a moped rider with two big pouches on the foot rest!

The term 'Furious driving' dates back to Victorian times before they had speed cameras and basically just means fast driving. There are still references to it on the CPS website, in regulations for Hackney Carriage drivers and elsewhere.

Your Police Officers were quite right in what they said .. you villain you .. apart from the fact that there is no usable power of arrest! The only possible way .. for you actually to be 'lifted' .. was if .. under 'common law'' .. you could be shown .. to have committed a 'breach of the peace' (Or whereby a breach of the peace .. may have been occasioned) .. (Or to be p*ssed)

Please tell me that they .. were 'County Mounties' .. & not London's Finest!!

I was stopped tonight funny enough... For WALKING IN A ANGRY MANNER... The old bill was gonna bang me up but i stormed off and was angry some more.... SOD THE ESTABLISHMENT AND BUGGER THE GREEN CROSS CODE...

"YOUR NEVER CATCH ME ALIVE COPPER."

Tommorow i will go skateboarding in a uncaring fashon....

That will teach em!!!

Reminds me of a couple of years ago the police had a purge on the guys in our office and they were actualy hideing in different areas to catch them in the fiendish act. Still at least the next time your being stabbed,shot,mugged etc- it's good to know your not going to be run over by a postman on his bike.

The term "Riding Furiously" only applies if you are riding dangerously, a bit like the "Reckless Driving" offence for cars (only more archaic). After all, it is possible to hit 30+ MPH downhill even on a 3 speed bike. But it would take you a lot longer to stop, than if you were in a Car or on a Motorbike.
