LTB212/18 Royal Mail Footwear - Alternative Footwear Reimbursement Process - Medical/Health Reasons
No. 212/2018
12 April 2018
Our Ref: C11/18
To: All Branches
Dear Colleagues,
Royal Mail Footwear – Alternative Footwear Reimbursement Process – Medical/Health Reasons
See attached for the assistance of Branches and Health and Safety Reps the current Royal Mail Footwear – Alternative Footwear Reimbursement Process for those members who have an identified Medical/Health problem which as a result they can’t wear standard Royal Mail footwear.
In these circumstances the individual provides the line manager with supporting evidence of the medical reasons by way of a letter from a GP, Podiatrist, Chiropodist etc., following which the Business will pay any reasonable costs incurred up to a Maximum of £30 once the evidence has been reviewed and authorisation given by the RMG National Uniform Manager. Once authorised, footwear can be purchased in line with RMG Policy.
The minimum standards which must be applied with special authorised purchased footwear in this way are: – Colour: Black and Style: a formal lace up with a heel. The sole must have adequate grip properties. If it is PPE Footwear it must be ‘CE’ marked. The Manager will check the suitability once alternatives have been identified and selected. The member then purchases the alternative footwear and claims the £30 via PSP. (See flow-chart attached).
Yours sincerely
Dave Joyce
National Health, Safety & Environment Officer

I have undergone this protocol with my GP and Line manager, My GP has certified that I have a condition which is permanent , Not subject to treatment and Unlikely to ever change , he has further added that I am fit to work in my own choice of footwear ( which accords to the stipulations in the agreement above ).
A new manager at our depot insists I must go through this whole protocol every six months, despite there being no prognosis of change in my condition, I don't claim any reimbursement for footwear, and I don't want to have to trouble my GP with this every six months.
Once the exemption is certified by a GP then surely that's enough, I don't have to go through this whole rigmarole every six months Surely????????? . I do not and have not claimed reimbursement for the footwear I purchase myself , I just don't want to have to go through the pain and disablement of trialling different RM shoes.

Don't claim because of all the B/S pain in the arse , just to get to wear shoes I can comfortably do my job in! Going to draw a line in the sand now! Next time this manager challenges my footwear , I ll ask them to suspend or send me home, because the medical advice is I cant do my job in anything else!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone know how long ago the amount of £30 was set. I reckon it's been at least 7 years that I know of. Haven't they heard of inflation! Seriously you can't get a decent pair of walking shoes for anywhere near that now. Why is this never addressed by union. Must be about a third of our office buys their own shoes.
