Drone firm's 'delivery announcement' creates excitement but is revealed to be an April Fool's

The UK’s largest network of CAA approved drone operators attempted to pull the wool over the drone industry’s eyes at the weekend with an announcement timed to coincide with April 1.

The Drone Safe Register sent out a statement claiming it was rolling out a rapid UAV delivery service that would “take on” Royal Mail due to its speed and low cost.

The organisation claimed its new nation-wide service would be capable of transporting packages up to 20kg anywhere in the UK and could deliver a maximum weight and sized package from John O’Groats to Lands End for £25.

“Commercial Drone Pilots in the UK are part of the rise of the drones, where customers can rely on the money back guarantee if their package isn’t delivered safe and sound inside 24 hours. This new door to door service will put the existing UK courier services to the test, particularly when the prices match (or better) those of Royal Mail,” it wrote.

While the announcement, in which DSR boasted that it would replace Royal Mail in two years, was an April Fool’s joke, the register’s founder told Commercial Drone Professional this morning that the service is actually not far off reality.

Mark Boyt, CEO of Drone Safe Register, said: “Our new UK drone delivery service was clearly an April Fool’s but could become reality sooner than we all think. The Drone Safe website was very busy over the bank holiday with many people expressing how excited they are and how to start using it.”

A video promoting the ‘new service’ can be found below.
