LTB 071/18 - ROYAL MAIL CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE: VOLUNTARY OPTION FOR PART-TIMERS TO INCREASE HOURS
No. 071/2018
6th February 2018
Dear Colleagues
ROYAL MAIL CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE: VOLUNTARY OPTION FOR PART-TIMERS TO INCREASE HOURS
I wish to advise Branches with Customer Experience (CE) members that a Joint Statement has been agreed with Royal Mail Customer Experience with regards to an exercise designed for part-time members to increase their total working hours up to full time on a voluntary basis.
This process, which essentially is a bid to increase the hours in the permanent resource pool, impacts upon c.300 part-time members in CE. Consequently, where applications are made to increase hours, it has been jointly agreed this will involve members signing a variation to their contract of employment.
Members have been informed via the Joint Statement below that any changes to hours will impact in a positive way on their six monthly bonus payments, annual leave entitlements, which will be based upon the revised contractual hours and of course pensions with the value of contributions increasing from both the member and the employer. All other terms and conditions of employment will remain unchanged.
The Joint Statement reads as follows:
“Dear Colleague,
As part of our valued CE workforce you’ll be aware we continuously review how best to manage the needs and demands of our customers. One of the ways we do this is through planning our resource and aligning shift patterns to when customers most need us. Our part-time workers are an important part of that plan and play a valuable role in delivering excellent service.
Part-time hours provide many people with the flexibility they need to fit work around their personal circumstances. However, if your circumstances have changed recently and you’d like to change your hours as a result, we’d like to hear from you. The opportunity to request a change to your hours is always available to you; maybe now is the time you’d like to do so.
If you’d like to change from part to full time hours, or increase your part-time hours, please express your interest in doing so via the below link by Monday 19 February 2018.
CE Request Form
For any increase in hours you will be asked to sign a variation to contract letter outlining the agreed changes to hours and how this will affect your pro-rata basic pay. Remember that bonus, annual leave and pension contributions will also increase if you decide to increase your hours but other terms and conditions of your employment will remain unchanged.
Once we know how many people are interested and their hours of choice, we can conduct a full review of availability, in line with the needs of our customers and the centre you’re based at. The aim is to finalise our decision making and confirm back to you by Friday 02 March 2018.
Kind regards,
Susan Harvey – Head of CE Central Operations
Andy Furey – CWU Assistant Secretary”
This initiative is entirely voluntary for our members; however, it is recognised that people’s circumstances do change over time and it may suit a number of members across CE to increase their hours to accommodate various lifestyle developments. The opportunity for part-timers to increase their hours is of course in line with our current Agreements and the Negotiators Agreement for Pay and Four Pillars.
Finally, it is my understanding that, due to current resourcing requirements, the majority of requests are likely to be met on the basis of improving the service to customers within the opening hours of the Unit.
Further developments will be reported as appropriate. Any enquiries in relation to this LTB should be directed to Lea Sheridan on 020 8971 7361 or lsheridan@cwu.org.
Yours sincerely
Andy Furey
Assistant Secretary
