Joint Statement between RM and CWU on Slow Manoeuvring Training

Dear Colleagues,

Branches will be aware of LTB 597/15 dated the 15th September advising of a Slow Manoeuvring training course trial in six offices; Derby, Luton, London South East, Perth, Plymouth and Thornbury that was governed by an agreed TOR. The course was bespoke to take account of the specifics of an individual yard with a duration of a 2 hour session that ensured the course is relevant to the drivers.

Whilst there were issues in some locations with deployment of the training, the results have been impressive. Evaluation over a 6 month period is attached which shows a 49% reduction in Slow Manoeuvring collisions as well as a 42% reduction in all RTC’s. The trial was subsequently expanded in 2016 to 22 offices albeit only 17 participated in the trial.

The course can now be delivered individually, or in groups of up to 5 delegates and is designed to deliver cultural change in offices where slow manoeuvring has been identified as an issue. The course will consist of a 1 hour classroom session covering Brand Awareness, Collision Statistics, Facts, Manoeuvring, Reversing and Risk Assessment. Further to this, there will be a 1 hour yard element to make drivers aware of the risks associated with slow manoeuvring, which will include a practical element of the classroom training and will enable the driver to put into practice what they have learned in the classroom.

The course is available for call-off by all offices operating van fleets and can be accessed via the Pertemps Portal. Training is entirely focused on driver development and does not include any assessment. Both departments feel this is a positive move in the right direction which is designed for Collection and Delivery Drivers only, but not Professional Drivers at this stage.
