LTB 563/17 - CWU Four Pillars of Security Campaign - Bulletin No. 21
BULLETIN #21 Friday 20th October 2017
ROYAL MAIL MUST LISTEN TO MEMBERS
On Thursday 19th October the CWU held a National Briefing in London to update Branches
on the latest position in our long running dispute with Royal Mail. This was followed by a
march through central London of CWU members culminating in a rally outside Royal Mail’s
Mount Pleasant site where the General Secretary and Deputy General Secretary (Postal)
made clear the Union’s unbending committment to continue our fight for fairness and
justice on behalf of members.
No last minute legal manoeuvres or High Court ruling is going to stop the CWU from
securing the best possible settlement on Pay and the Four Pillars and securing an
agreement that delivers decent employment, standard of living and retirement security.
The CWU intend to ensure the mediation process is completed strictly in line with the
words and timescales set out in the Agenda for Growth Agreement. This requires the
appointment of an external Mediator within seven days of the Court ruling and a maximum
of four weeks for the mediation process. The parties must then meet within a week of the
process concluding to decide their response to the Mediators report after which there is a
two week cooling off period. This means the whole process should be concluded by early
December. Any attempt by Royal Mail to delay the process and drag their feet will be
strongly resisted.
The CWU goes into the mediation process with a massive mandate from our members.
Our message to Royal Mail is clear – listen to the overwhelming voice of your own
workforce and make a significant and substantive move in forthcoming talks or face the
inevitable prospect of strike action.
YOU PICKED THE RIGHT SIDE
THIS DISPUTE IS FAR FROM OVER, WE WILL CONTINUE CAMPAIGNING
KEEP VOICING YOUR SUPPORT AND WE WILL WIN.

I suspect that the Royal Mail boardroom just don't know where to turn or what to do for the best. Its obvious why Royal Mail's Comms were totally and utterly centred on getting its staff to vote NO. I don't think its entirely because they got greedy but its partly because they just don't know how they should negotiate with the Union either. What should they concede, what should they insist on?? I don't think they know!!
Once it was became clear that playing hard ball by proposing changes in sick pay or route ownership and comparing us to Yodel and Hermes were not going to work; it becomes immediately obvious that Royal Mail don't have a back-up plan. This Injunction was a last ditch attempt at stalling for more "talks". After 18 months what exactly is there to talk about?? Its almost like the business wants things to change but 90% didn't say YES for strike action for nothing. Most of us are honest and hard working and can see past all the bullsh*t because we are facing issues in our delivery offices NOW...issues like oversized deliveries, on top of more ridiculous lapsing just because someone rang in sick, and wanting to work to time and being asked by young dumb-ars*d managers who have never done the full duties as posties why we can't work any overtime. Is there any wonder why posties feel threatened by Royal Mail and it will take something a bit more than £375 to put staff's fears at rest.

On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

I agree but it's not just what is now it is the future lot's of staff are part time but work full time hours for less and don't get holiday pay or a decent pension but also they are trying to lower full timers to lower standards this will not work what is needed is a change in the culture of the business and without this their will be no agreement!postslippete wrote:I suspect that the Royal Mail boardroom just don't know where to turn or what to do for the best. Let's do some maths...CWU intend to ensure the mediation process is completed strictly in line with the
words and timescales set out in the Agenda for Growth Agreement. This requires the
appointment of an external Mediator within seven days of the Court ruling and a maximum
of four weeks for the mediation process. The parties must then meet within a week of the
process concluding to decide their response to the Mediators report after which there is a
two week cooling off period
Assuming the mediators are ready to go Monday morning which in itself is a big assumption.
4 weeks from Monday is 20th November.
The parties must then meet within a week that's 27th November.
2 week "cooling off period" that's 11th December.
2 weeks notice of strike action that's you've guessed it...Christmas day lol.
Yeah the clock's ticking.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

I hope the union soon stop banging on about a Christmas strike. It can't happen in 2017 now. The way these talks are likely to plod onwards tho... a 2018 Christmas strike may be a possibility!
