Hermes has opened its 270,000 sq ft purpose built automated parcel distribution hub in Rugby. The £31 million facility can handle over one million parcels daily

The business’ overall parcel processing capacity will now been increased by 45 per cent.

“We are extremely proud to officially open our Midlands Super Hub in Rugby, the largest parcel hub of its kind in the UK,” said chief executive Carole Woodhead. “This substantial project demonstrates our total commitment to delivering world-class delivery solutions, not just for today, but for the foreseeable future.

“A retailer’s top priority is to have complete confidence in their delivery partner’s capacity during peak. This £31m investment guarantees that we will continue to operate a highly proficient operation throughout the year, including those intense and prolonged spikes of activity.

“The facility significantly strengthens our network and infrastructure, vastly enhances our throughput capability, and guarantees that we are in the best possible position to support the UK’s retail industry for many years to come.”

There's quite a few players in the parcels business, at some point it's going to make commercial sense for one to buy the other, just like UPS wanted to buy TNT.

I see one of our local Hermes guys whilst on my walk most days, if I remember rightly he says he's paid 60p per parcel on the most densely populated part of town but it's more for the semi rural area he also does where the houses are a bit more spread out.

Perhaps it varies area to area different parts of the country as well.

In any case they seem to be proactively investing loads of money, who knows they may progress to having employed delivery drivers.

Nowt wrong with being self employed, I have to admit I quite enjoy the job, its like what a postie was like 10 or 15 years ago, under no pressure to finish at a certain time, (early or late) or questions will be asked, freedom of working alone, no health and safety Nazis gunning for you because your wearing non issue uniform, no bloody d2ds, ok so there isn't holiday pay, sick pay etc, but its not the job you would d do if you wanted to work 40 or 50 hours a week, most folk at my depot work around 20 to 30 hours a week, nice little earner for part time it is. By "contracting" drivers on a selfemployed basis they have cut their overheads way beyond anything RM could hope for. managers are still arse holes but that's life.
you only get paid for what you deliver so obvisosly first time delivery rates are high.

I have seen the future: indoor staff on the minimum wage; those paid by the hour required to work at a rate determined by the company theorists, and if you don't achieve the required rate then you will be subject to performance management before you are replaced. Youll be under less management pressure if you are paid by piece but you'll still be working effectively at the minimum wage so you'll feel financial pressure. The future will be with us sooner than many expect.

don't knock till you've tried, of course I would rather be at RM but my health dictates otherwise.
ive no financial worries so quite lucky there, never been in a union, ands its certainly a fairer way of getting paid, eg you only get paid for what you do, so anyone with an easy round gets paid less and those with bigger rounds get paid more, not like at RM where some can finish 2 hours early and all get the same pay.
My current round is paying 87p a parcel plus add ons for so in a month where I deliver 1000 parcles 3 hours a day x 6days x 4 weeks I pick up about £950 less expense of running my van equates to about £10+ an hour pick up.

The myHermes driver on my delivery says she gets 40p per pacel. She spends about 3 hours per day delivering about 40-70 parcels (100 very exceptional), Monday-Saturday. She doesn't get paid extra for sorting and collecting from the local hub (about 2 miles away).
If she is off sick or on holiday she has to arrange her own cover.
