Watch PORN online? New UK law wants you to register at the Post Office before watching

Watching online porn is about to get a whole lot harder, and no, not like that.
New regulations could make mandatory age verification a reality, forcing UK internet users to prove they are older than 18 before they’re allowed to access any adult-only content.
This won’t just mean marking a tick box on your smutty site of choice either.
Instead, those looking to access pornographic content will need to prove their age by entering their credit card details or sharing their mobile phone contract information.
Perhaps worse than this though, you’ll also be able to approve your device for porn access in person by making a trip to the Post Office.
The move comes as The Digital Economy Act has finally received royal assent.
This means that the controversial Act has now been ratified and will be enforced in the UK.
Although not the only element of the Act, this means that all websites that host pornographic content will be required to age check all online visitors.
The move has taken some time to be brought into action, with reports surfacing as early as May 2015 that the UK Government was planning to block any webpages that failed to comply with the mandatory age checks.
Under the scheme proposed back in 2015, pornography would be forced to offer visitors a choice of identity providers – including their mobile phone operator or the Department for Work and Pensions – to confirm if they are over the age of 18.
Despite the outlines, it’s currently unclear exactly which of these verification methods will be put into use when the new rules are rolled out.
While age verification looks to help prevent underage users stumbling across inappropriate content, it could, it’s been suggested, cause issues with data protection.
According to UK Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham a balance needs to be found "between verifying the age of individuals and minimising the collection and retention of personal data".
Ms Denham also highlighted concerns about any age verification that required the collection and retention of documents such as a copy of passports, driving licences, or other documents vulnerable to misuse or attractive to disreputable third parties.
It’s been claimed that websites that fail to adhere to the new laws could face fines of up to £250,000, or 5% of their turnover.
It could also cause embarrassing conversations for millions of laptop and smartphone owners who’d rather have their private online sessions kept private.
Aside from stricter rules on online pornography, the Digital Economy Act also includes tough new sanctions for those caught downloading or streaming copyrighted content with(out) permission from the rights holder.
Some believe the new penalties will hit those who use Kodi-powered set-top boxes to watch pirated content.
