Top firms give shareholders billions that could wipe out pension scheme deficits

Big firms constantly bleat about how they cannot afford their pension schemes.

Pension deficits v dividends paid

But research by a pension consultancy company shows that nearly half of Britain’s top 100 companies could have cleared their entire pension deficits with the payment of just one year’s dividends that are paid out to their shareholders.

The companies in the FTSE 100 index handed out £69 billion to shareholders, more than five times the £13 billion they made in pension contributions.

Dividend payments go overwhelmingly to people who are already very rich.

Of the 60 companies that say their pension scheme is in deficit, 46 could have cleared their whole shortfall by withholding a year’s dividends.

These included BP and Royal Dutch Shell, the energy groups, GlaxoSmithKline, the pharmaceutical maker, and Unilever, the consumer goods group.

The Pensions Regulator, the toothless government body supposed to watch over the health of pension schemes, has recommended safeguarding schemes by redirecting some dividends. But the JLT Consultancy that produced the research says, “We did not find much evidence of employers adjusting their dividend policies following guidance.”

In fact, instead of securing future pension payments, companies are shutting down the present schemes and replacing them with worse ones.

This means they can keep the money for profits and dividends.

Last week Royal Mail announced it had begun “consulting” workers on the fate of its 90,000-member scheme. In recent months, Tata Steel UK, BMW, Marks & Spencer and US multinational Honeywell have laid out similar plans.

The CWU union that organises Royal Mail workers said that any unagreed pension changes will spark a national strike ballot.

When the bosses and the government come with their sob stories about pensions, unions should not give in to the blackmail.

The money is there to fund decent pensions for all.

This is what globalisation means as capitalism reaches ever further for a profit they will come back to us to make us all poorer and themselves richer and our pensions our the biggest target as we have earned this benefit as our past works for our future quality of life and most of us planed upon this as our right. Of which it is so in any society that was decent to workers but now we have globalisation everything is cheep including life who would have thought we send despots hundreds of millions of pounds of UK money to subdue people all over the world yet rip off hard working people like postmen/women and doctors nurses firemen prison officers and the police of this nation yet the instigators of this have GOLD PLATED PENSIONS and they are the ruling elite MP'S and former heads of government of the UK and beyond!

Without dividends the share price would crash, the company would then no longer be in a position to raise capital and would no doubt become the target of a takeover when then the workforce at best would be decimated and conditions/pay set back 20 years, worst case they would just asset strip. Either way you wouldn't have a pension to pay into for very long in anycase.

Fair point.

Some of the biggest shareholders aren't pension schemes, it should be said also.

But yes, you are correct - its kind of a race to the bottom.

This is what "free" market economies run like - it feels like no-one is steering the ship/there's no joined up thinking/no long term plan. My gain is your loss and vica versa - even though we are all in the same boat.

What I do know is that in my retirement I'll be £2500 per year worse off.

My hopes of an early retirement are receeding. But maybe this is a part of the plan as well.

This is something I hope the union look at in regards to how much in dividends are being paid (have been paid already) I mean we are the ones that generate the proffits so if the pension pot is going to struggle in the future then let's have a year with no dividends so as to fund the pension pot, put your workers first for a change you greedy C****

It wouldn't surprise me if they actually want us to strike so as to drive the share price down and set Royal Mail up for a take over bid.
If we roll over on this then our terms and conditions will be next so we must make a stand, this will be bigger than just the pensions.
