It seems to me that a lot of RM's pension problem comes from a big reduction in staff not paying into the scheme. RM has fewer staff, many of which are on part time contracts with low hours and far more work is done on non-pensionable overtime.
I think a strike or overtime ban would have little effect if there is no alternative put forward. Perhaps a show of force for fair overtime rates where we all 'benefit' from completing our duties on overtime would be a good bargaining chip.
I figure that the average employee works 55 minutes with a 5 minute break per hour and with RM currently contributing 17% that puts the overtime rate at 27.6% over standard (60 / 55 * 1.17).
So, if the hourly rate were £10 then overtime should be £12.76
Obviously completing a duty on overtime should is voluntary to the employee so should command a premium and the more overtime performed the more money RM should have for the pension pot (with hours worked equating to the amount of work done and the income for the company)
I think a blanket and permanent ban on overtime demanding a rate of time plus a half for overtime would be a good basis for setting sensible negotiations towards a sustainable future for both employer and employee.
