CWU Member - Stephen Wightwick

It is with great sadness that we write to notify Branches of the sudden and tragic death of Stephen Wightwick, a postman at Debden Delivery Office and member of the CWU Romford Amal Branch.

Tragically Stephen was killed in a hit and run accident whilst on his way to work on Thursday, 1st December. Stephen leaves behind his wife Dalene and 10 year old son, Jonathan.

We are sure that all colleagues would wish to join us in passing on our deepest sympathies to Stephen’s family and friends.

The Romford Amal Branch and Anglia Division have set up a support fund to help the family through this difficult time and any Branches wishing to make a donation can do so via the Romford Amal Branch (details below).

Southend man arrested over fatal Buckhurst Hill crash which killed cyclist Stephen Wightwick

A man has been arrested following a collision in Buckhurst Hill where a cyclist was killed.

A 36-year-old man from Southend was arrested on Saturday morning on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop after a collision. He has been released on bail pending further enquiries until March 27.


The collision happened shortly before 4.15am on Thursday (December 1). A man, who has been provisionally identified by police as 38-year-old Stephen Wightwick, of Buckhurst Hill, was found lying in Roding View with serious injuries.

He was taken to the Royal London Hospital but sadly died later that evening. The vehicle involved in the collision had left the scene and officers appealed for the public's help to find it.

It was found in a compound in Basildon and the arrest was made.

Steve is survived by his wife Dalene and son Jonathan, 10, who family friend Sarah Ward-Kaye has raised £3,730 for after starting a GoFundMe campaign.

Ms Ward-Kaye said: "Dalene and Steve have a wonderful, bright and artistic son, Jonathan, who has just turned 10.

"This little boy is now left without his dad and Dalene without her husband."

DI Dave Jones, of Essex Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "I would like to thank all of the people who contacted us with information following the witness appeal. Information is always crucial to our investigations."

THE family of a cyclist who died following a crash last week, have paid tribute to him.

Stephen Wightwick, 38, died following a driver's failure to stop after colliding with him in Buckhurst Hill in the early hours of Thursday, December 1.

Police have confirmed a 36-year-old man from the Southend area was arrested on Saturday morning on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop after a collision.

He has been released on bail pending further enquiries until March 27.


Mr Wightwick's family said he will "be sadly missed by his wife, son, parents, sisters, nephew and wider family and friends."

He has been described as "a loyal, honest and very hard working devoted family man, an old-fashioned charming gentleman who was loved by everyone and loved being a father."

The tribute continued: "Steve grew up in East London and attended St Bonaventures Secondary School before graduating at Leicester University with a degree in Politics, History and Economics.

"He went on to work as an independent researcher for the Mirror newspaper, he was then a full time father for three years before starting work for the Royal Mail.

"Beside his family, Steve’s passion in life was a wide range of music and he collected records. He also loved cricket, football and cooking.

"Steve did all the cooking and his son will really miss his dinners."
