CLLR JOHN KELLY - GLASGOW AND MOTHERWELL BRANCH

It is with deep sadness and regret I have to inform you that Cllr John Kelly, Assistant Secretary and Political Officer of the CWU Glasgow and Motherwell Branch, passed away peacefully earlier this week. Unfortunately, at the beginning of this year John had been diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease.

John Kelly joined the GPO and became a member of the Post Office Engineering Union (POEU) in 1970 - over 46 years ago. He was always an active member from joining the union. He steadily became more involved and served on the branch committee as well as holding various branch officer positions. He regularly represented the union as a delegate to the Scottish Labour Party Conference.

John was a proud and devoted member of the Labour Party and both he and colleagues in Scotland were delighted when in 2012 he was elected a Glasgow City Councilor for the Garscallen and Scotstounhill Ward. He remained a committed and active member of the CWU Scottish Political Forum. He regularly attended CWU conference and was always keen to make a key political contribution on behalf of his branch.

He was highly respected in the union every level and was totally committed to the Trade Union and Labour movement. He always showed great dedication and conviction for the wellbeing of his members and constituents. I know that he will be missed by all his friends and colleagues in the union.

At this terribly sad time our thoughts of course are with John’s partner Trisha and all his close family and friends. I will on behalf of the CWU convey our deepest sympathy and condolences to them.

Tributes have been paid to Labour councillor John Kelly, who died this week.

Kelly had represented the Garscadden and Scotstounhill ward on Glasgow City Council since 2012.

He was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in January.

Tributes paid to Inverness councillor who died suddenly while on holiday

Leader of Glasgow City Council Frank McAveety said: "There will be a deep sadness in the Labour movement in Scotland today, and for some long time to come, about the passing of Councillor John Kelly.

“John was only elected to Glasgow City Council in 2012 yet with his quiet diligence he made his mark, particularly in his contribution to the council’s adoption of its living wage policy.

“All John’s life as a trade union official was spent trying to improve the lot of his fellow workers and that of the less fortunate in general.

“John bore the standing and dignity of a man steadfast in his conviction that the world should be a better place. He will be missed. Sorely missed."

Kelly was also a longstanding member of the CWU. He was the union’s Glasgow and Motherwell assistant branch secretary and political officer.

CWU deputy general secretary (telecoms) Andy Kerr paid tribute to his commitment to working people.

He said: “John not only represented workers as a union rep, his great passion was politics and, as a committed socialist, he fought tirelessly for working class people particularly throughout Glasgow.”

Kerr called Kelly’s death a “sad loss to the trade union and labour movement”.

Former Glasgow Labour MP and MSP Margaret Curran tweeted: “Heartbroken at loss of my friend. Stood out for his decency & kindness. Big loss to labour family. Will miss him so much”.
