LTB 389/16 - EU REFERENDUM
LTB 389/16 - EU REFERENDUM
No. 389/2016
24th June 2016
Dear Colleague
EU REFERENDUM
Following the EU Referendum result, the union has issued the attached statement to the media.
The CWU recommended a vote to remain in the referendum, primarily because of the risk Brexit, under the leadership of the Tories, would pose to employment rights.
In our view, the referendum result and the campaign over the past months, has underlined the urgent need for a new political settlement in this country.
The issues highlighted in our statement represent the things we will be campaigning for to make sure the voice of workers – whether they voted for leave or remain – shapes the future of the UK outside of the EU.
Yours sincerely
Dave Ward
General Secretary
CWU RESPONSE TO EU REFERENDUM RESULT
CWU General Secretary Dave Ward said “The referendum result represents a call for a new political settlement. People are entitled to be angry about what we have all seen in recent years – an explosion of insecure employment, an appalling housing crisis, rising inequality and relentless attacks on our public services.
We recognise that many CWU members would have voted to leave the EU and although we supported Remain, it was always on the basis that Europe and this country needed serious reform. From today, we take that fight directly to the UK Government.
What’s crucial now is that the whole labour movement unites in shaping the outcome of what taking back control of our country should really mean.
At the forefront of this, we are calling for a new deal for workers, radical solutions to the housing crisis and an approach to the economy that is based on Government intervention to support our industries and public services.
It’s also clear the country needs to have a more open and honest debate about immigration. This has not happened during the campaign - we cannot allow the country to be ruled by those who preach fear, division and the scapegoating of migrants.
There is a serious divide between the Westminster elite and communities across the UK. It’s time to change the balance of forces in this country, which means taking back real control – of our railways, public services, schools and hospitals.
We don’t need a new Tory Prime Minister to do this - We need a new Government”.

There was a also a difference of opinion between the cwu and a large amount of members. Maybe the cwu could start listening to us.

Pardon..
You never asked your membership their opinion regarding the EU !
You have stopped asking and stopped listening. you have stopped representing us and would rather push your own political agenda.
In case it escaped you. IT IS s**t ON THE SHOP FLOOR.

You have to laugh really, prior to the referendum the CWU aligned themselves with Corbyn, Cameron et al and now they're full of rhetoric about the parlous state of the nation - something not too apparent in the last 6 years. Well who or what are they going to back next? If I was a betting man I wouldn't be taking any tips from these guys.

Just like the ruling elite in this country the CWU try telling people whats good for them. I personally do not mind if we are in or out of Europe but we are entitled to a vote but have been denied one up to now. The people have spoken

Well I would say that they have spoken but the ramifications have yet to kick in this vote would mean withdrawal of investments which would cost job's and tariff's which would cost job's, We could retaliate with our own tariff's and make their fancy car's and cheese more expensive for us all as well as cheep crap car's from Italy which I find most posties own just imagine 10% on a fiat. But it could become a hell of a lot worse if the far right get in power and demand that we have access to those markets by force and you can imagine what the hell could happen next and this time we will not be on the winning side!tpost wrote:Just like the ruling elite in this country the CWU try telling people whats good for them. A week is a long time in politics and there is a lot of scare stories being thrown around in the media. A logical approach is to see what happens as we are still a major player in Europe and Brexit is still 2.5 years away and a lot can happen by then. It may turn out to be a good thing for the country and for Europe, time will tell.k979aaa wrote:Well I would say that they have spoken but the ramifications have yet to kick in this vote would mean withdrawal of investments which would cost job's and tariff's which would cost job's, We could retaliate with our own tariff's and make their fancy car's and cheese more expensive for us all as well as cheep crap car's from Italy which I find most posties own just imagine 10% on a fiat. It's 2 years from when we invoke Article 50, Cameron is not going for another 3 months, then they have to pick a new PM who will invoke Article 50 so 2.5 years is about right BUT it could be longer depending on the negotiations.k979aaa wrote:It is 2 years and have you or anyone you know got a trade deal with the EU and if you do tell us all now.tpost wrote:A week is a long time in politics and there is a lot of scare stories being thrown around in the media. So given that we import so many french and German cars and other goods would it be a good idea for them not to trade freely with us.Brexit could mean us signing up to free movement of people and goods however we would have more control for instance refusing admission to people we do not want and also these people would not have the same rights as uk citizens such as voting.Best turn the TV off and stop worrying, like I said 2.5 years is a long time and the political elite do not give up that easily.k979aaa wrote:It is 2 years and have you or anyone you know got a trade deal with the EU and if you do tell us all now.tpost wrote:A week is a long time in politics and there is a lot of scare stories being thrown around in the media. FWIW (though I understand the sceptics above) I thought that was a reasonable response from Dave Ward/the CWU.
I voted Leave - but I did have my misgivings, namely around employment rights/legislation (as mentioned by D.Ward). I could easily have gone the other way. I reckon there will have been a lot of people like me.
This idea that everyone should be 100% certain is a bit daft if you ask me. Those that seem to be certain of all the answers rarely are - they are usually after something.
It was OK to vote Remain. It was also OK to vote Leave. It isn't an exact science.

It is not just export import where our lack of participation will result in the lower growth of our economy but investment do we have access to the single market what is our risk to lend to! Remember we don't have any control over this and will not get a lone from the EU like Greece did if we need it we are our on our ear and nothing will change this!tpost wrote:So given that we import so many french and German cars and other goods would it be a good idea for them not to trade freely with us.Brexit could mean us signing up to free movement of people and goods however we would have more control for instance refusing admission to people we do not want and also these people would not have the same rights as uk citizens such as voting.Best turn the TV off and stop worrying, like I said 2.5 years is a long time and the political elite do not give up that easily.k979aaa wrote:It is 2 years and have you or anyone you know got a trade deal with the EU and if you do tell us all now.tpost wrote:A week is a long time in politics and there is a lot of scare stories being thrown around in the media. It was getting loans from the ECB that put Greece on the road to ruin in the first place.k979aaa wrote:It is not just export import where our lack of participation will result in the lower growth of our economy but investment do we have access to the single market what is our risk to lend to! Its regretable to see people losing jobs at HSBC and JP Morgan but to make an omelette you have to break some eggs. I can't remember the City mourning too much when communities were destroyed through pit closures so its hard to have too much sympathy for banks that skim off a living by producing nothing but debt

And precisely where do you think the EU got the money from to lend it to Greece and there'll be more of the same for other countries in due course - the EU will be known as the Loan Star State and we don't want to be a part of it and that's why the exit vote won.k979aaa wrote:Remember we don't have any control over this and will not get a lone from the EU like Greece did if we need it we are our on our ear and nothing will change this!
