Southsea woman in court after Jack Russell bites postman

A WOMAN has appeared in court after her dog bit a postman.

Rachel Robinson, 45, of School Lane in Southsea, pleaded guilty at Wrexham Magistrates Court to owning a dog that was dangerously out of control, causing injury.

Helen Tench, prosecuting, told the court that on September 30, postman Joshua Wiffen was making regular deliveries on School Lane when he saw a Jack Russell come out of Robinson’s address.

The dog was barking as it ran towards Mr Wiffen, who was delivering mail next door.

He waited 20 seconds before running toward his van, which was parked roughly six houses away, but the dog ran after him, jumped up and bit him on the hand.

Ms Tench said Robinson apologised to the postman the next time she saw him, which was a week later.

She had not been at home at the time, but received a letter from the postal service informing her of the incident.

She said that Robinson questioned how the dog got out of the garden because she did not open the gate, yet it was found to be open.

She said that since the incident Robinson had taken steps to stop it from happening again.

But on January 30 at 11.30am Mr Wiffen was delivering post in the street when the same Jack Russell began barking at him and came running out of an alley.

A boy came from the house and picked up the dog, apologised to Mr Wiffen and took it away.

Robinson represented herself in court and said when she first spoke with Mr Wiffen following the incident, he told her he’d bent down to stroke the dog.

“My back garden is now entirely secure,” she said. “The gate is latched and I don’t know how it became unlatched on the day, but my stepfather has made sure it is now unable to come undone.

“The dog is a sweet-natured dog and this has been a traumatic experience for me – I’ve been keeping her in the house while I have been working because I am so concerned that this has happened.”

District judge Gwyn Jones said: “He may be gentle and genuine with family members, but it is clear he was not with the postal service.”

He fined Robinson £400 and ordered her to pay a £40 victim surcharge, £85 prosecution costs and £300 compensation to Mr Wiffen.

Judge Jones also issued a contingent destruction order, which means the dog must be muzzled at all times when in a public place.

The garden must also be secured so the dog is confined to the garden and family home.

Does that mean she was going to work and leaving the dog in the garden or the back door open? why are people so stupid
