A POSTWOMAN was left hospitalised after a dog savaged her hand while she was delivering mail in Dursley.

The incident saw a woman who works for the Royal Mail maimed by a dog, understood to be a husky, as she posted mail through the door of a house in St George’s Road.

Between April 2014 and April 2015 35 postmen and women working in the GL postcode were attacked by dogs.

The Gazette contacted a Royal Mail spokesman at the end of last week who confirmed there had been a serious dog attack on a member of staff.

The spokesman said: “We can confirm that a postwoman was bitten by a dog while out on delivery in St George’s Road, Dursley, and is being treated for injuries to her hand.

“We have spoken to the owner and a posting box has been installed in the outside wall of his property.”

The Gazette understands the postwoman was initially taken to Dursley’s Vale Community Hospital, only to be transferred to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital due to the severity of her injuries.

A large number of postal workers are attacked by dogs each year, with around eight postmen and women suffering dog attacks every day.

The Royal Mail says it is committed to working with customers to drive this number down, with dog attacks posing a significant hazard to postmen and women on a daily basis.
