Royal Mail employee says he fears for future after final privatisation deal

THE CONSERVATIVE Government has sold off its remaining 13% stake in Royal Mail – leaving staff in fear of major layoffs as a result of complete privatisation.

The last stage of the sell-off took place ten days ago but workers are worried about the future.

A postal worker, aged 52, who wished to remain anonymous, said he had worked for Royal Mail for nearly 30 years but now fears for the future.

“It’s a misguided idea, privatising Royal Mail as one of the few departments of Government that actually makes money, means the monopoly we had is now splitting off to companies such as TNT.

“Deliveries used to only take two-and-a-half hours on most days but because of savings they’ve increased to six hours.

“The younger ones coming in are starting an hour earlier than they should be just to get work done, and they are not given breaks.

“I regularly have to stop at petrol stations to use the toilet on my rounds as we aren’t getting enough time at work.

“It used to be a great company to work for but with this privatisation us older staff are struggling to keep up and many workers are having to reapply for their jobs.

“It’s bad news all round, the government have promised to look after our pensions, but even though I’ve worked there for nearly 30 years, I’m not expecting a golden handshake.”

A spokesman for the Communication Workers’ Union – which supports the rights of mail workers – said: “This sell-off is a disgrace, just a disgrace.”

Royal Mail refused to comment on potential job losses but the organisation’s senior corporate PR manager Harshna Brahmbhatt said the privatisation would have no direct impact.

“There will be no change to the way Royal Mail operates other than the addition of the usual reporting requirements for listed companies with shareholders.

“We work with our unions on salary negotiations when and where applicable, during the normal course of business.

“Royal Mail employees continue to be a member of the relevant Royal Mail pension plan, or if they are already retired, continue to receive their pension.”

Business Secretary Sajid Javid said in a written statement to the commons published on October 13: “Following independent financial advice, the Government decided to sell their remaining shareholding in Royal Mail. The shares were sold through an accelerated bookbuild which enabled Government to realise value for the taxpayer.”

Well that goes against normal working practice for a start, so I think the person commentating is doing nothing more than scaremongering.

if what you say stands up to scrutiny there's no need to "remain anonymous".
if “Deliveries used to only take two-and-a-half hours on most days" what did he do for the remaining 5½ hours ?
“I regularly have to stop at petrol stations to use the toilet on my rounds as we aren’t getting enough time at work" doesn't make sense.
"I’m not expecting a golden handshake” but nobody expects a golden handshake these days.
