I used to run marathons, and in training leading-up to an event used to clock up 80 miles of running a week. Taking out a trolley on some of the walks I cover, is as much as an 8/9 mile walk, meaning up to 40-50 miles of walking a week ,carrying and pushing heavy weights. Add it all up = unsustainable.....I had Achilles trouble ,worked through it, nearly crippled me. Taken me 6 months to recover. No more marathons. Ice baths are effective, if you can bare it. It is a terrible thing that Royal Mail are doing to their staff....the general attitude seems to be at you are luck you have a job....What?! Even if the job, stresses you out, ruins your long term health and makes you generally miserable?

There are ways to use Tape as a support on the achiiles, and I found it does work. In my case flat feet caused extra strain , A national Rugby teams Physio showed me How to do it Over Twenty years Ago . And Every so often I have to apply it.
You tube gives various demonstrations, Personally I use electrical tape (cheaper) and cover It With A Light weight ankle support. Try it .

Hey guys,

Don't over look your RM footwear here!

I had achillies pain (sharp pain in morning with stiffness) in one ankle for a few months until I worked out my achillies was rubbing against the high ankle support of my Magnum trainers. I had switched to these from CATS which have a lower and SOFTER ankle support area.

These Magnums are in my mind unsuitable for everyday use as the ankle support is is just the wrong place and too firm. If it was much softer or lower or higher more like boots it would likely be fine.

The solution I used was to cut in a straight line down the back of the support material (about 1.5cms) which gives you achillies more room and stops the hard material from rubbing into your achillies on every step.

hi ive had problems with my achilles in the past and what i found really helpful was to use a foam roller (go on youtube) and used it on my calfs as it was tight calfs that cause the problem. after using it for 3 or 4 days i noticed a BIG difference

I've had pain in my Achilles for the last 8 months or so, and am taking Naproxen everyday - I have recently changed to wearing the Magnum shoes from the YDS trainers, and have noticed a big improvement, the YDS trainers were ripping my feet apart...

This is worth every penny if you've been told you have tight calf's,and they say most foot problems are caused or made worse by tight calf's even the dreaded PF

I have had Achilles Tendonitis and also Plantar fasciitis although not at the same time.
Had to lay off running and took 6-9 months of nursing back before it was okay-ish

Achilles Tendonitis - Rest, ice ,ibuprofen, light stretching exercises ,also tendon massage.

Plantar Fasciitis- Rest ,Ice, ibuprofen .Get some decent footwear or insoles with good support, also think about wearing night splint.

Took me a year to get over PF,I don't think anything makes a difference once you have got it,tried everything but it finally went off it's own accord, physio told me to keep stretching my calf's thats why I brought the slant board and thankfully no recurrence of the dreaded PF.

hi there, 1st post so be gentle.

I have bad achilles tendonitis in my left ankle and have been refered to physio by my doctor and atos and im still waiting for appointment from either, i have played no sport for 7 years due to breaking my leg at that time and have a letter from my doctor staiting that as i dont take part in any sport the tendonitis is due to my walk duty with royalmail.
Have been told that the treatment i need is shockwave treatment and that it is very good, my doctor refered me to a private practice as this treatment is not done on the NHS and will cost between £600 & £725 depending on number of treatments, though atos provide same treatment but want to start the cost at £1200.
My manager has asked her manager about the treatment and was told they would not pay for the treatment.
My question really is should royalmail pay for all or at least some of the treatment especialy as i have a letter stating that i have this problem due to the nature of my job or do i have to swallow the cost myself.

any help would be much appreciated
thanks, chris
Hi , having shockwave treatment soon on both hips x4 treatments then another x 4 later , on other side , did you take time off during the treatment and after? Worried about doing my walking delivery during and just after this procedure as sooooo want this to help. On a first stage, and near 30 years service.
