Special delivery

Post by SJH101 »

Hoping someone can clear this up for me..........I'm sending an expensive phone to someone and have been told that special delivery doesn't cover mobile phones up to £500?? The only compensation amount for loss or damage is £50. Supposed to be due to scams. I was unaware of this. Is it true?

Firstly, you would be much better posting this in the customer forum, where it's supposed to go, you would probably have had a much faster response!

Secondly, Special Delivery will cover you for up to £2500 if you pay the extra fee (£500 if you don't pay the extra) but the service is only available to UK destinations. If you are sending abroad then International Signed For etc will only cover you for £50 for mobile phones, for the reasons you state.

Thirdly, wherever you are sending it, mobile phone batteries are subject to very strict rules on how they are packaged and failure to follow them could lead lead to destruction of the phone (with no compensation for you) and potentially a criminal record. If you are sending abroad, about 30 countries ban all lithium batteries in the mail, so even if you package it correctly then it will be destroyed by customs at that end (Germany and China are the obvious examples).

Overall, if you follow the rules, sending a mobile phone within the UK via SD works pretty well, but sending one abroad is a bit of a nightmare: I would send them the SIM and let them get a new handset!

SJH101, you didnt say where you were sending the phone to, apart from the battery issues /restrictions/prohibitions already mentioned compensation for overseas mail containing phones is limited to £50.
