It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Assuming you’re a basic rate tax payer and you sell the shares after 3 years, you will pay 20% income tax and 12% National Insurance.

If you earn enough to be a higher rate tax payer and you sell after 3 years, you will pay 40% income tax and 2% NI.

After 5 years, no tax or NI will need to be paid at all.

Details are in the ‘guide to RM shares’ we all received when the floatation was first announced.

is that 20% of the value of shares
or 20% of the profit the shares have made since they were allocated

It's the percentage of the value.

The share price today is £4.37, so a full timer with 729 shares has £3,185 worth. If you could sell now you would effectively pay 32% in tax assuming you're a basic rate tax payer. In money terms that's about £1,020 in tax.

If you're a higher rate tax payer, you'll pay 42% in tax, or about £1,335.

Put it in to an avc and pay no tax if you want to sell but if you want the money I don't see a way of not paying it.
