No tracking number because of bad RM service

Post by TheMax »

Hello all,

I posted a small parcel at my local Post Office 1 hour ago, I’ve paid my postage online before.
So, at the Post Office, they didn’t give me a receipt. All they said was, I wouldn’t get one because of my online postage purchase. As the assistance said, I will find my tracking number online, no receipt needed. But, when I try to track my item on my Account summary, I have to type in my “tracking number found on the receipt”!! ?!

This parcel contains very important documents and I used the International Tracked and Signed service, so shouldn't they be able to provide me with a tracking number? Both, the Post Office and the online service say, I'll get the tracking number of each other.

Without a proof, that I've posted that parcel, I'm F*** up :chuckle

Luckily I took a pic of the label I printed off for my parcel, but I can't find a tracking number there..

Anybody having a good idea?

I would go back to the post office ASAP you may get there before Mail is picked up, the post office has made an error they were meant to affix the tracking bar code and give you a receipt which would have had the tracking number on it

Error by post office not Royal Mail who are a separate company from the post offices now

Thanks for your reply.

As you said, and as the royalmail customer service advised me, I went straight back to the Post Office and asked for my tracking number again.
But all they said, was like a "Sorry we can't help you."
They gave me a handwritten proof of postage, but that doesn't help me in any way, as I need to know, if my documents were delivered to the university in Germany or not.

I mean, I paid 8.70 for that Small parcel to receive "tracked and signed service", and now it is posted as a normal parcel worth £ 3.70 just because of lack of knowledge of the assistance?
So what is crazier? That they won't give me a refund of £ 5 or that they treat me as it has been my fault?

I had exactly the same issue a couple of months ago. I bought ISF postage using PayPal/eBay/RM. The resulting label did not have a tracking number on it and there were no instructions on what to do. I didn't realise that there was no tracking number until I went to mark the item as dispatched on eBay. I went back to the PO, who said they'd never seen this before. But they said they would attach one of their barcode labels, scan it, and then provide a receipt with the tracking number. Everything worked fine afterwards - except the painfully slow Russian postal system!
From my experience it does seem like your PO mistake

I think it's best for the future to pay the postage at the local PO. Then you can avoid confusing things like that.
Thanks for your answers.

Post office wrongly advised you in the first place, even if you pay online your tracking number is not generated until you hand it to the post office staff to apply the correct stickers and produce your tracking number.

You should be complaining to Post Office customer services on 03457 22 33 44. In general, you shouldn't be complaining to Royal Mail unless it's about the instructions on their website.

Please don't be too hard on the Post Office staff, the training on this subject is poor and the transaction is rare in many offices.
