I sent a letter to HMRC in Liverpool.
Royal Mail Track and Trace shows what follows:

03/01/15 04:59 DESPATCHABLE TOBULK DELIVERY WARRINGTON MAIL CENTRE
03/01/15 04:29 RECEIVED ATWARRINGTON MAIL CENTRE WARRINGTON MAIL CENTRE
02/01/15 19:37 DESPATCHABLE TOWARRINGTON MAIL CENTRE HEATHROW WORLDWIDE DC
Bootle PDO is just a couple of miles from the letter's destination... and yet it went back to Warrington.
Does anyone know what may be going on?

Its only a guess as I don't work in either Bootle or a Mail Centre. However I am guessing that HRMC is a bulk user, that means they get loads of mail, and indeed they may have a contract that means its delivered direct from the Mail Centre by a certain time.
The last 2 codes may just be that Bootle prepped it and scanned at the time sown, then Warrington MC delivered it along with all the other mail later on.
If you are concerned check with HRMC in a few days, it seems to take a few days to get registered as received on their own internal system.
