City Link workers grafted while fatcat tycoon prepared special package of misery

JON Moulton allowed staff to pull out all the stops before Christmas - then pulled the rug out from under them says RECORD VIEW.

THE full human tragedy of the collapse of parcel firm City Link is laid bare in the Record.

Hardworking Mick Ward and his son and daughter are all suffering because of an abject failure of management.

The three family members thought they were working for a secure company.

Little did they know. While they put the hours in, fatcat boss Jon Moulton was preparing to deliver his own special package of misery when he gave them the boot.

The former Tory donor, who now supports Ukip, even has the gall to blame the unions for this shameful episode.

As we said on Saturday, Moulton must have known his firm were on the ropes. Yet it appears he still allowed his staff to pull out all the stops – unaware they were about to be thrown on the scrapheap at Christmas.

It also bears repeating that the demise of City Link should set alarm bells ringing about the future of Royal Mail. The universal service obligation must not be eroded by millionaires and Con-Dem ministers hell-bent on chopping anything deemed unprofitable.

It’s a message spelled out in stark terms in this paper by Billy Hayes, general secretary of the CWU union who represent post workers.

He rightly warns of the intense pressure of competition and the importance of protecting high standards and the employment rights of staff. The fight to protect our precious Royal Mail goes on.

Today though, our thoughts are once more with the hardworking staff of City Link who believed they were securely employed – but ended up paying for other people’s failures.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

But Billy must know that high standards and the employment rights of staff count for nothing with "the intense pressure of competition" being all about cutting costs.
"The fight to protect our precious Royal Mail goes on" but none of us are optimistic.
