Control Conditions have been placed on the licence for a dog which bit a postal worker as he walked away from a property after delivering a parcel.

They are - that the dog must be kept on a lead and muzzled when in a public place and otherwise must be confined to a yard or building from which it cannot escape.

When details of the incident came before Ballymena Borough Council’s Regulatory and Operational Services Committee on Thursday night, Councillors endorsed that the Control Conditions be imposed on the dog owner’s licence and also agreed that the person in charge of the dog at the time of the attack should receive a formal caution.

In the event that the person failed to accept the caution, it was agreed that Council would instigate legal proceedings.

Earlier, councillors heard that on September 8 a report had been received from Royal Mail that a postal delivery worker had been bitten by a dog whilst making deliveries in the Princes Street area of the town.

The committee was informed that as the postal worker was walking away from a property after delivering a parcel, the dog came off the property and bit the worker on the back of the leg causing a minor wound for which the victim received medical treatment.

Councillors were told that the person in charge of the dog at the time of the attack had co-operated fully with the Council’s investigation and fully admitted the relevant offences committed.
