I despair at the amount of posties who are not willing to do the job properly, if you dont want to do it for a security reason then fair enough i would back you all the way, but just because you dont want to do your job properly is not right, your helping royal mail cut jobs, i hope that people like this will be the ones who volunteer for redundancy if and when they start looking for cuts, let the posties who are willing to do the jobs properly keep there jobs
They're actually helping posties keep jobs because by p739 items it means more work for the people in the collection office therefor protecting the jobs in there. In fact by not knocking neighbours doors they're creating jobs because now offices are opening Sundays so that people can collect parcels. So if they did deliver to neighbours there would be less parcels coming back so less work for locker staff to that would lead to job losses.
I disagree far more time spent trying the neighbours thus increasing hours in the office than the number of hours increased by delivering a p739 to the first door, average time to handle a p739 in the office is probably a minute max, time taken to try few doors then go back to original with the p739 is probably several minutes, it's a bigger saving of hours

I tell my customers about the opt out sticker if they don't look comfortable when i ask if they will take packets. They are always very grateful and always very confused as to why royal mail have not informed anyone about this option.I tell them its all about hitting targets blah blah.I ordered an opt out sticker 3 weeks ago and still have nothing. :arrrghhh

Average time a minute max? Have you actually worked in the callers office?

That's straight B/S. I went out with packets last Saturday at 7am to clear the backlog on one route. Barely anybody answered the door, and I wasn't about to disturb neighbours. Come Tuesday I redelivered a good half of the packets I carded on Saturday, so how can you say it's taking work away, 739'ing item if anything creates work. From the people on the delivery, to the people on the phones/online who deal with the request, to the people in the callers office who put it back out.

"It works for our competitors" ...

... who are paid by the item ... we're paid by the hour (until we go over then it's aggro booking docket) ... it's not rocket science is it ???
"We're under model" - oh no we're not - stick your lapse elsewhere ...

Royal Mail need to make the public more aware of optout stickers.
Better still, ban this practise of opting in everybody before they are asked whether they want to, or not.
Common courtesy, that's all.

We've only had very brief talks on the subject in our office but it seems mostly targeted at Tracked items and an attempt to win back the Amazon contract.

Got a few on my round with notes on their front door saying " do not ring with parcels for neighbours" and "Only take parcels for this address"

Ok few points in regards to your post,

1 its not BS, in your situation you are going to a maximum 2 doors to deliver that parcel, doing the job properly would mean going to a minimum of 3 doors maybe more, hence more time on delivery to do this. callers office staff are still required regardless as even after trying neighbours your not always going to get them in, also bit of a non argument there as RM looking to increase callers office opening times anyway

2 if its out for redelivery chances are your probably going to be going that door with mail anyway

3 clearing a back log of packets? you cant get a backlog of just packets if doing the job properly, which clearly you are not doing, the only way to get a back log of just packets is by streaming mail, ie taking the letters out and leaving the packets

4 not disturb the neighbours? sorry its actually your job now to do that, if you are disturbing them and they are not happy then by all means tell them how to opt out, its their decision to do this or not, not yours(again as i said above i will back anyone not delivering for security reasons but will not defend anyone who cant be bothered)

Can you come and sort our place then? Think it is mainly due to the usual suspects not filling cards in correctly tbh.

Ive worked in the callers office. Originally, we used to find packets by customer surname and that changed when we had a computer system. This meant someone had to input the name and address on the computer together with a number and write the number on the parcel. To find a customers parcel required using the system to find the number.

Now, due to the overload of parcels and/or saving of manpower we have ditched the computer and resorted to organising parcels via surname again!! Generally, its a lot quicker in the office so if I can't get the parcel delivered I just slip it if necessary.

What I would like to see being used more often though is customers using post offices to collect parcels. Sometimes, it is more convenient for them and as we have them, we may as well use them, even if it incurs a 50p delivery charge...
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

and no royal mail scanning amazon parcels for tracked items yet ? Why not. It will give Amazon more information for their delivery feedback.

DTN is a cheap short fix measure.

RM should be enterprising the way with unmanned parcel lockers stores. How much does space on the high street really cost now? If charity shops are everywhere.

PDA technology should be improved so redelivery requests by customers can be forwarded to us via texts as and when they happen, so if you're still on duty you can nip back. I'd rather do that instead of lapsing.

Bring out a 5:30pm-9pm packets service. Those who want it can spend a little extra, limit it by postcode to most populated areas.

Do Sunday delivery asap.
