A Westminster MP has called on a private postal firm to “get a grip” after a Maida Vale resident spotted one of its workers dumping letters in a bin in the street.
Karen Buck, MP for Westminster North, says she has become increasingly concerned about the service being provided by Royal Mail’s rivals TNT Post in the wake of reports from several residents suggesting the company is not up to the job.
The latest incident was reported to her by Eddie Linden, of Sutherland Avenue, who maintains he recently saw a postman dressed in the company’s distinctive orange and black livery throwing letters into a bin in broad daylight in Elgin Avenue.
“I was quite shocked by it. I’ve never seen somebody dump letters,” he said. “It’s not the service you expect.”
The Dutch-owned company began delivery operations in London earlier this year and a number of problems – including undelivered mail – have surfaced around the capital.
In April the Wood&Vale
reported how a woman in St John’s Wood ended up delivering letters herself to several addresses in a neighbouring street after their mail was pushed through her door. Ms Buck also said she has
received other complaints from people in the area about their mail being left outside their front doors.
“It’s extremely worrying to hear, particularly as although this latest incident is the most dramatic I’ve heard of, it’s not the first. If TNT is going to be in competition in the postal service it needs to get a grip,” she said.
“It is responsible for the service it provides and if it wishes to be in competition with Royal Mail it has to provide a service that’s professional and at a level that users expect.”
She has urged residents who experience problems with TNT to contact her so she can monitor the situation.
A spokesman for TNT Post said it took allegations of this nature very seriously, adding: “We have looked into this situation and the gentleman has confirmed that he did not see what the postie placed in the bin, or look to see if there was any mail in there.
“This incident is alleged to have taken place over two weeks ago, and we can confirm that there have been no reported incidents of non-delivered mail in the timeframe mentioned.”
n TNT has also urged customers to contact them on 01628 876 729 with any further concerns.
