Unbelievable. So you are saying that the managers will not take sides.
Best statement I have heard in a while.

OPGs (ordinary post people) would have been a better choice for the role than time-served reps who carry a load of historical baggage IMHO. I thought that was the whole idea.

It'll be a whole new ball game where leopards change their spots - the whole concept is a bit naff really, the idea of negotiating is to reconcile what each side is prepared to accept as an agreement when a dispute arises - much like the recent problem in London where it appears that a mediator wasn't necessary just the old tit for tat chattering.

No if your a mediator then you will not do any mediation in the area you come from and will not be able to support either managements or the unions position and you cannot recommend a solution which means one or the other parties have to accept.

It's a skilled position and unless you have had an experience in negotiations or with ACAS or another form of mediation then it is not an easy role for someone to adapt into.

But Reps don't have the skill set. As you have explained, they only see it from the Union side, as Managers see it from their side. Ordinary posties would have been a better choice, IMHO. They are in the middle.

Definitely jobs for the Boys (and Girls), not as advertised.

In any given situation there is a reasonable compromise and that was always the purview of the union reps of whatever ilk and the end of the day the situation will have to be resolved and there will consequently be a solution. All I can see is that it is just going to take longer because you now have a tripartite situation at the table. Lets see how long this shambles lasts - I mean the problem in London had the Div Rep and the Delivery Director on a tete 'a tete
and lo and behold the problem went away. You keep saying it's a skilled position dingo but they aren't doing anything - I mean why not choose me I'm a dab hand and doing nothing most of the time.

So basically I could have applied then :Very Happy , I've held negotiations with acas in the past.... mind you biggest waste of time in my opinion, they tended to lean to whoevers represented royal mail (wankmans).....so how will these new mediators be trained.... :cuppa

Do these new mediators operate in the same manner as all the `independent` appeal managers or bullying and harassment investigators...if so I have every confidence in them. ;liar
Royal Mail managers.....about as popular as a t.urd in a swimming pool!
The DDA/Equality Act demands action,NOT words......adjustments NOT Occupational Health referrals.Case No:2505901/09
Royal Mail is an Equal Opportunities Employer..It discriminates against everybody.

725 applicants for 10 posts!

The mediator role does seem a bit vague given we already have a process in place to deal with disputes which is'nt being replaced unless I'm ill-informed of course...

The relationship between DIM and Rep can often be one overshadowed by personalities... so a fresh pair of eyes may sometimes be useful... clutching at straws I am... :hmmmm

For unofficial action which lasts more then 24 hours there is external mediation

Look mediation is ok if you want a fresh pair of eyes. But rarely in my experience does it lead to a solution which was not being explored before the mediator turned up.

So why do we need mediators with a capital M skill set or is it just a bit of a sinecure for the chosen?

You can bet the decisions of all these will not sit well with the workers.
