The discovery of about 250 letters in a west London park has led to concerns over a private delivery company.

The collection of post included bank statements and medical letters.

They should have been delivered by TNT but were left in a bush for nearly two weeks. The company has apologised.

BBC London reporter Tarah Welsh spoke to Chris Elsdale who found the mail.

TNT dumps mail in London

A report by BBC London last night (Tuesday) alleged that over 200 letters were found dumped in north west London with the postmark bearing the name of delivery company TNT Post.

The report said that a local resident had contacted the company to notify them that the letters were there but no action was taken to collect them and deliver them.

TNT Post has said that it aims to expand its workforce to 20,000 postal workers by 2017. Currently, the company is operating in south west and north west London, Manchester and most recently, Liverpool.

CWU deputy general secretary Dave Ward said: "It's important to hold all postal companies to the same standards. TNT seem to want a race to the bottom over employment standards whereas we feel that if staff are treated fairly and paid a decent wage then it's unlikely incidents such as this will occur.

"Because there is no obligation for the company to meet the needs of customers, what we were are seeing is cost cutting at the expense of the jobs, pay and conditions of postal workers by employing staff on zero-hours contracts and paying less than the living wage."

"The CWU is calling on the communications regulator Ofcom to remove the ability to cherry pick delivery areas to maximise profit and to ensure they serve all customers within a certain area instead of excluding less profitable customers and restricting themselves to low-cost areas."
