Ukraine’s national postal service cites temporary difficulties in delivering mail to Crimea

Ukraine’s national postal service Ukrposhta has requested postal administrations within the Universal Postal Union (UPU) to stop sending mail addressed to Crimea until further notice because it can no longer make deliveries to the region.

The UPU released a message from Ukrposhta on Friday 4 April 2014, which said the ongoing crisis in the region had created “difficulties delivering postal items” to Crimea, which was taken over by Russia last month.

“Ukrposhta, therefore, asks the designated operators of UPU member countries to suspend the dispatching to Ukraine of any international postal items addressed to Crimea (postal codes in the range 95000–99999),” Ukrposhta said in a statement issued via the UPU.

Ukrposhta said global postal operators will be informed about the resumption of deliveries as soon as the situation changes. The peninsula of Crimea located in southern Ukraine by the Black Sea coast is at the centre of an international crisis after it was seized by Russian troops in February 2014.

Russian Post said it was accepting international express mail addressed to the Crimea region as well as mail from Russian customers bound for Crimea.

“Russian Post is doing everything possible to preserve the unity and integrity of the postal network and the provision of postal services in the peninsula,” state-owned Russian Post said in a statement.

According to the latest statistics held by the UPU, Ukraine received some 20 million letters and more than 2.5 million parcels from abroad in 2012.
