Royal Mail results expected to show slump in parcel arm following privatisation

Royal Mail could report slowing growth in its flagship parcels division when it issues its first set of financial results since privatisation.

Analysts have said the postal service, which has seen its shares soar by 70pc since listing last month, is also likely to take a one-off financial hit from the cost of floating.

The half-year results, due on Wednesday, will come on the same day Business Secretary Vince Cable faces a grilling by MPs over accusations the shares were sold too cheaply, leaving taxpayers short changed.

This week leading bankers from a host of City institutions – including Goldman Sachs and UBS – were told by MPs they had ‘failed the taxpayer’ for advising the government to sell shares at 330p each. Shares last night closed at 539p, down 6p.

UBS, which was one of the banks that worked on the privatisation, also told investors this week to ‘sell’ the stock.

It said the upcoming results could show a slow-down in the parcels business.

Royal Mail expects its parcels arm to grow strongly in the coming years, offsetting the decline in traditional post such as letters.
But UBS warned: ‘We would expect to see some weakness in parcels due to tough comparatives, pricing increases and a slowdown in e-commerce growth.’

Investec analysts said the results ‘will also contain some one-time exceptional items associated with the listing, together with pension reform credit’.

The analyst firm added: ‘The other main expected news should be the financial detail of the much anticipated labour agreement with the Communication Workers union (assuming that a deal is reached shortly).’
