One thing I think would help conquer this artificial divide, if it really exists and is not just in peoples minds, is that Delivery Staff and MC staff should, as part of their training, spend 1 day in the others functions. Even managers, it would certainly help cut down on inefficient practices and would help each function understand the challenges for the other - thats what real WCM should aim for.

I've worked in a MC, and some of the staff in my office still do OT at our local one. Everyone agrees that working in a MC is far easier, BUT those of us on delivery would still rather do delivery instead of working indoors being bored so none of us has any resentment towards MC staff.

Fair point, i'd hate to sort mail all day as would most in my office. I really like the balance between being inside with a fair bit of banter to cheer me up and then getting out for some fresh air. I think that's the tough bit for part-timers, mostly all outdoor work, that's a tough way to earn your money. Of course there's some s**t days along the way, but hey.........that's life.

Oh I don't know I think you'd get used to having a subsidised canteen with a gymnasium at minimum cost.

With three knee ops and advanced arthritis on the go in my mid 40's, my gym days are over. Canteen would be nice though yeah, on second thoughts......bloody MC workers

In case your wondering b a break is that part of the working day when you aren't working - not that we know much about that since BT2010 of course.

I,dunno 'bout any other indoor workers but I do a fair bit of walking ,humping parcels around the office, plenty pushing yorkies about ,arguing with managers,arguing with union reps, B&h from some managers,though I have learned from the last 25 yrs in RM how to not be a victim,as some D.O staff,as well as MC ,seem only to willing to be..
I have heard MC staff slating DO staff,and vice versa, now how is it when we were younger we wanted to be older ,grown up.....and now when we are ALL grown up,we act like kidz,

Thats because the CWUHQ put a BT2010 sticking plaster over the wound, they thought that they had solved the problem. However under that plaster the wound festered and turnd into a big fat septic boil - Yet still they seen reluctant to lance it.

It wouldn't be sorted :( as the problems are so bad in delivery. :( All those cuts will bite royal mail in the arse. I asked a guy who always do a lots of overtime after his duty, does he still do them now after 3 months of changes (I was off) and he doesn't do them anymore. I had asked about 20 people about the changes and no one say a good word about it.

I can't understand why Royal Mail introduce van sharing stuff. I am dreading it when I am cleared to start on delivery as I will be out of shape and a new system and relearning the walks.

What about cross functional working in mail centres, most mail centres have a delivery office attached, why not a week on delivery a week in processing?

That's how we used to work, my shifts were 6 nights at the MC followed by 6 mornings on delivery, I did that continuously for 18 months. It didn't seem bad at the time but thinking back I only had 1 full day off every 2 weeks!

They're obviously grafting but I bet they have a subsidised canteen and a gym to work the lard off

When I joined RM, and became a substantive A.P.(associate postman) after 3months I got an assesment on how I was progressing, by the then Manager, who was a right bawbag, your general time keeping etc. ,then you would get a test on a letter frame for speed, sortation etc. you would be offered a apart time contract and if you accepted you would be given a dust jacket and a badge and told what was expected of you then after ,think it was a year, you were sent to your local D.O ,if you didn't have a D.O you stayed in the M.L.O, and learned the job ,how to do a proper bundle with string and a proper knot that could hold that bundle so tight ,yet with one pull of the string it would loosen,you learned where places were that you had never ever heard of,you learned to take pride and responsibility in your job but enjoy working for each other.......!!!Anyways, what I suppose im trying to say here is that there were standards back ,not so long ago which RM has been slowly eroding over the years,so that any,and I mean anybody can do the job,with absolutely no training whatsoever,now the majority of new entrants have no interest in doing the job correctly or taking any sort of pride in their own work ethics just aslong as they get loads of hoolie and that paycheque at the end of the week, so RM gets quantity over Quality and pays them peanuts ,and you know what happens if you pay peanuts.....
