Magical Thinking
One of my neighbours came over to say hello the day the Royal Mail was privatised. ‘I expect you’re looking forward to getting your hands on all that money you’ve just made,’ he said. The shares allocated to me as a member of staff had gone up by almost 40 per cent in a day. The government had brought forward the date of the IPO in order to beat a strike ballot by the Communication Workers’ Union. Most of us, like most people, were against the privatisation. It felt like my neighbour was congratulating me on taking a bribe. - See more at: http://www.lrb.co.uk/blog/2013/10/24/ro ... XJCSY.dpuf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Well you had the option of refusing it.Roy Mayall wrote: It felt like my neighbour was congratulating me on taking a bribe. - See more at: http://www.lrb.co.uk/blog/2013/10/24/ro ... XJCSY.dpuf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
You could have joined the ranks of the 360 refuseniks.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

I wish I could afford to be so cavalier with money. Did you refuse it?clashcityrocker wrote:Well you had the option of refusing it.Roy Mayall wrote: It felt like my neighbour was congratulating me on taking a bribe. - See more at: http://www.lrb.co.uk/blog/2013/10/24/ro ... Re: Magical Thinking
All i say to customers "is what shares we haven't been given anything yet,as we can't cash in for at least 3 years so anything can happen to them!"
"well at least you have a job" they say....
Then they stfu when i say it's all about speed now so soon no more knocking on several neighbours doors to get rid of a parcel or have time to go round the back garden to leave in shed/greenhouse etc as writing a card will be quicker!!
And as of now all couriers can F.off with me giving them directions anymore cos they're frikin useless,at least on the rurals:p

Re: Magical Thinking
One obviously staunch tory came out to me recently and said, ' your well off with all those shares you have now then!'
Oh I said, we haven't got them yet, and we can't sell them for three years while everybody else can and what will they be worth when we try??
'well your strike will affect that.'
'Well we are trying to defend our rights for as long as we can', you as a rural customer might as well kiss goodbye to your service'.
'Your pessimistic aren't you'
'No i'm telling you what will happen because we won't be able to afford a rural delivery!'
'We'll see, he said'
'No it will happen, we will see!'
I had to bite my tongue, the public are generally so bloody ignorant because of biased media and political views makes me sick.

Re: Magical Thinking
The media has done nothing but question the future of the USO and rural services. Of course they, like you are simply guessing what will happen and just because a member of the public isn't prepared to fall into line with your pessimism does not make him ignorant.vigilante wrote:One obviously staunch tory came out to me recently and said, ' your well off with all those shares you have now then!'
